Adenoidectomy
Adenoids are bodies of tissue found in your throat that prevent germs in your mouth from travelling to your chest. If you experience recurring inflammation of your adenoids – known as adenoiditis – your consultant may decide that the best treatment is to remove your adenoids. This operation is known as an adenoidectomy.
Treatment overview
In most cases, an adenoidectomy should only take around 30 minutes. Your doctor will perform the procedure using a general anaesthetic, so you won’t be conscious during the operation. When you wake up afterwards, you’ll need to rest at the clinic for a few hours until your body has recovered from the effects of the anaesthetic.
You’ll usually be discharged on the same day once you’ve had something to drink and eat, but in some cases you may need to stay overnight. Your surgeon will usually schedule a follow-up consultation to check that the wounds where the adenoids were are healing properly.
The main symptoms after surgery to have your adenoids out may include a blocked nose, sore ears and a sore throat. You may also experience a numb tongue as a result of pressure applied to it during surgery. Although you will feel fairly uncomfortable after having your adenoids out, recovery usually happens within a couple of weeks of the operation.
Recovering from having your adenoids out
To help you cope with any pain that you may be experiencing, your doctor will prescribe basic painkillers that you’ll take orally. You should avoid taking aspirin, which can encourage bleeding. To facilitate a quick recovery, you should rest for a few days after the operation but it is important to stay relatively mobile and drink plenty of fluids.
