Helping to treat more people, faster

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with one woman diagnosed every 10 minutes – so early breast cancer screening is critical for the detection of changes such as breast lumps, nipple discharge, pain, asymmetry, or lumps under the armpit, and subsequent recovery.

You do not need a GP referral to access our personalised diagnostics service. It is available for any patient already experiencing symptoms, as well as those with concerns such as a family history of cancer. You’ll receive a same-day consultation and one-stop triple assessment, which includes a comprehensive evaluation of any changes in the nipple, to help us build a clear picture of your breast health. Patients will see a consultant, go for imaging and tests, and even have a same-day biopsy if required.

The Triple Assessment

If you feel an unexplained lump or notice a change in your breasts or nipples, get in touch to arrange an appointment within 48 hours. You do not need a GP referral. Our gold standard approach begins with a triple assessment during which you may spend between 1-4 hours in the breast clinic, depending on your individual pathway and required investigations. You will receive:

Detecting and diagnosing breast cancer

Breast cancer is a cancer that significantly impacts women globally, but it can also affect men too. That’s why regular screenings and attention to breast changes are vital. Lumps, nipple discharge, breast pain, asymmetry, changes in the nipple, or lumps under the armpit, all warrant expert consultation. Our world-class team can diagnose breast cancer using mammography, MRI, and biopsies to distinguish between cancerous and benign growths. Early detection often leads to successful treatment, with high survival rates for early-stage breast cancer.

Depending on the stage, we may recommend monitoring or immediate treatment. Advanced cases often require surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, or targeted treatments. The London Clinic is the only private hospital in the UK that provides full cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. We are also one of the largest private centres to provide all types of breast reconstruction, including microvascular surgery, implant-based reconstructions and DIEP flaps.

Checking and diagnosing breast concerns

Regular breast screening and paying close attention to any changes is vital, as breast cancer can affect both women and men. Symptoms such as lumps, nipple discharge, breast pain, asymmetry, changes in the nipple, or lumps under the armpit should always be assessed by a specialist.

At The London Clinic, our world-class team uses mammography, MRI and biopsies to distinguish between benign and cancerous findings. Early detection is key, and with the right tests, many breast concerns can be identified and treated successfully, particularly in the early stages.

Weekly breast MDTs

Every week our surgeons get together in a multi-disciplinary team meeting (MDT) to discuss imaging findings, the results of biopsies, and to decide the most coordinated responses for treatment.

By having these meetings weekly, as opposed to fortnightly, we can help our patients get started on their treatment sooner. Plus, this collaborative approach means you can feel safe and secure knowing every possible option is being discussed.

Our range of breast assessments

The London Clinic offers a state-of-the-art imaging department providing patients and referring doctors access to a comprehensive range of tests and investigations, catering for every individual need.

Breast tomosynthesis, also called three-dimensional (3-D) mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), is an advanced form of breast imaging, or mammography, that uses a low-dose x-ray system and computer reconstructions to create three-dimensional images of the breasts. Breast tomosynthesis aids in the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease.

Described as the future of AI and breast-cancer detection, Genius AI™ uses deep learning technology to find cancers with improved accuracy compared to previous generations. This enables radiologists to read and understand results quickly and reduce the likelihood of the need for repetitive screening.

Mammograms are notoriously uncomfortable. Our new machines feature moulded padding which is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable experience. Studies have shown that 93% of women reported increased comfort with the curve padding.

The London Clinic is the only private hospital to offer MRI-guided vacuum breast biopsies. This means if something shows up on an MRI that we feel needs more exploration, we can diagnose it without surgery using an MRI-guided needle biopsy.

Tomosynthesis is an advanced form of mammography which can aid interpretation in denser breasts. It provides a three-dimensional (3D) image using a low-dose X-Ray system.

Our state-of-the-art digital Mammograms capture highly detailed images of breast tissue. This helps our world-leading breast radiologist consultants accurately assess and spot changes, and ultimately inform the treatment you may go onto receive.

Breast Ultrasound is a safe breast diagnostic test used to determine whether an area of concern is normal breast tissue, a cyst or a solid mass that could be a tumour. Your consultant may use this technique to further investigate an abnormality picked up by a Mammogram or on a lump found during an examination.

Performed under local anaesthesia with MRI, Ultrasound or X-Ray guidance, a VAB extracts a larger tissue sample than a core biopsy and therefore provides more information about abnormalities in the breast tissue. It’s a fast and safe alternative to more invasive surgical biopsies.

These are tiny radiofrequency emitting seeds inserted into breast lesions to provide guidance for breast surgeons during surgery. These new localisers replace previously used wired technology to make the patient’s experience more comfortable.
