What to expect
Step 1 Enquiry & booking
You can see a consultant directly, with no GP referral needed. Simply self-refer by phone or via our contact form. A referral letter is only required if you would like to go straight to a diagnostic test.
Step 2 Initial consultation
Your consultant takes time to listen, understand your symptoms and history, and examine you. This may include a gentle internal examination such as a proctoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, and the findings guide which tests, if any, you need.
Step 3 Diagnostics & onward care
Tests may include bloods and stool tests, colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy, CT or MRI, or examination under anaesthetic. We aim to complete investigations within a week, prioritising urgent cases.
Step 4 Follow-up & treatment planning
You stay in regular contact with your consultant's team and a specialist nurse where relevant. Together they formulate a management plan tailored to your condition and your personal needs.

Complex colorectal cases are reviewed by two specialist multidisciplinary teams (MDTs): the colon cancer MDT and the IBD MDT. These bring together gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, pharmacists, dietitians, psychologists, stoma nurses, pelvic floor nurses and pain specialists, who review your imaging and results together to agree the best plan – especially valuable for cases where expert consensus matters most.
Most major UK and international insurers cover colorectal consultations and treatment, subject to your policy. Our team can check your cover before your appointment.
If you’re a BUPA member, we offer a direct-to-colonoscopy pathway, so eligible patients can be booked straight for the procedure without a separate consultation first. For other patients, we usually arrange a brief initial assessment – sometimes by telephone – to confirm a colonoscopy is the right test before booking.
We provide complete, continuing care with the same specialist team. Cover depends on your policy; for self-paying patients, we’ll explain the options.
