What is it for?

Improving strength, mobility, balance posture and day-to-day function; as well as helping you to prevent or recover from injury and/or surgery.

What is reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates that is performed on a specialised piece of equipment called a reformer. You will need to lie, stand, sit or kneel on a sliding carriage supported by springs. By altering your body position and spring tension, exercises can be tailored and progressed to make movements easier or more challenging to strengthen muscles and work safely within your current ability.

Reformer Pilates is for adults who want a safe, structured way to build strength and control – whether recovering from an injury operation, managing a long-term condition, or simply want to move better.

Price

From ÂŁ120 per hour, or a self-pay package-price of five 1-hour sessions for ÂŁ440.

Why might I need this treatment?

Reformer Pilates can be useful for rehabilitation after injury or surgery, can help improve balance for fall prevention, improve posture and building strength without high-impact loading on joints. As we offer a 1:1 service, every exercise is selected and adapted for your body, your goals and how you’re feeling on the day.

You don’t need to have an injury to benefit from 1:1 reformer Pilates — many come simply to maintain fitness, to move better; or prefer individual guidance over a public class setting.

Your physiotherapist will work with you to set clear, realistic goals – whether this is walking more comfortably, returning to sport, or feeling more confident in everyday movement.

How effective is physio-led reformer Pilates?

Many people notice improvements in how they move and feel within a few sessions. Your Pilates trained physiotherapist will review your progress regularly and adapt your programme so that it continues to challenge you safely. More information on effectiveness can be found here.

Who delivers this service?

All 60-minute sessions are delivered by qualified physiotherapists who have also received APPI Pilates reformer training which means your clinician is highly skilled in clinical assessment and managing injuries or post-surgical rehabilitation. Pilates exercises are chosen and adapted specifically for you and you’ll benefit from hands-on guidance and real-time corrections as well as clear plan that integrates with any wider physiotherapy or rehabilitation you’re receiving at The London Clinic or elsewhere.

Risks, safety and side effects

Reformer Pilates is a low-impact, generally safe form of exercise when led by a trained professional. However, as with any physical activity, you may feel muscle soreness after sessions, especially when you’re starting out or progressing your programme. Certain movements may not be appropriate for some conditions or post-surgical precautions, so your Pilates trained physiotherapist will adapt exercises to keep you safe. Very rarely, existing pain may temporarily flare if you overdo things, which is why you’ll be encouraged to share any discomfort during or after sessions so your programme can be adjusted.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

No. While many clients come as part of rehabilitation after an injury or surgery, others attend simply to build strength, improve posture and move with more confidence.

Self-pay patients can usually book directly. If you’re already a physiotherapy patient at The London Clinic, speak to your physiotherapist about whether reformer Pilates would be beneficial for your recovery.

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, such as leggings or shorts and a t-shirt. Grip socks are recommended.

This varies from person to person. Some people book a short block to learn safe technique and build a foundation, while others choose regular ongoing sessions for longer-term strength and injury prevention. Your physiotherapist will discuss a plan with you at your first appointment.
