Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)

Also known as: HBOT, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, hyperbaric chamber therapy, oxygen chamber treatment

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment where you breathe 100% oxygen inside a specially designed pressurised chamber, helping more oxygen reach damaged tissue to support healing and recovery.

At The London Clinic, your HBOT is delivered in a hospital setting, in a spacious, comfortable chamber, with a trained healthcare professional monitoring you throughout every session.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which you breathe 100% oxygen while inside a specially designed pressurised chamber. The air we normally breathe contains around 21% oxygen. By raising the pressure inside the chamber, much more oxygen can dissolve into your bloodstream and travel to the parts of your body that need it most.

This extra oxygen can:

  • Improve oxygen delivery to damaged tissues
  • Support wound healing
  • Reduce swelling (oedema)
  • Help your body fight certain infections
  • Promote overall tissue recovery

HBOT is usually given as a course of sessions, and is often used alongside other treatments, such as surgery, wound care or antibiotics, rather than on its own. Your dedicated healthcare professional will assess whether HBOT is appropriate for your condition before treatment begins.

Why might I need hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

HBOT may be considered for selected patients where increasing oxygen to the body’s tissues could support healing or recovery. It may be recommended if you have:

  • A compromised skin graft or surgical flap
  • A non-healing or complex wound
  • Radiation-related tissue damage following cancer treatment
  • Certain orthopaedic conditions, including refractory bone infection (osteomyelitis) or avascular necrosis
  • Any other condition where tissue oxygenation is compromised

HBOT isn’t suitable for everyone. Your consultant will review your medical history, current health and any medications before recommending treatment, and will explain whether it is right for your individual circumstances. You can also self-refer, where our dedicated CNS will assess whether the treatment is right for you.

Possible risks and side effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy

HBOT is generally well tolerated, and serious complications are uncommon. However, like all treatments, it can cause some side effects.

These can include:

  • Ear discomfort or a feeling of pressure in your ears
  • Temporary light-headedness
  • Tiredness after treatment
  • Rarely, sinus discomfort or changes in your vision with repeated sessions

You will be closely monitored throughout your treatment to keep you safe. Please tell our team straight away if you experience:

  • Significant ear pain
  • Chest discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Anxiety or distress

Your session can be stopped at any time if needed. Because your treatment takes place within a hospital, our team has clear measures in place to safely bring the chamber back to normal pressure and help you out if you feel unwell or distressed.

The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy with The London Clinic

HBOT is offered by a growing number of clinics, but not all of them are hospitals. At The London Clinic, your treatment takes place within a fully equipped hospital, with the clinical expertise, safety measures and support you’d expect from the UK’s largest independent hospital.

When you choose us for HBOT, you benefit from:

  • Treatment in a hospital setting, with a trained healthcare professional monitoring you and staying in contact via intercom throughout every session
  • A spacious, comfortable chamber that doesn’t feel claustrophobic, with TV and music to help you relax
  • Clear safety procedures, so your session can be paused and the chamber safely returned to normal pressure at any time
  • Care that links directly with your surgical, wound care or cancer team, so HBOT supports the rest of your treatment

Whether you live in the UK or are travelling from abroad, our dedicated team is here to make your treatment as smooth and comfortable as possible.

How much does hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy at The London Clinic costs ÂŁ180 per session, or ÂŁ800 for 5 sessions. The number of sessions you need will depend on your condition, and your consultant or CNS will confirm the full cost of your course before treatment begins.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

This depends on your condition and how you respond to treatment. HBOT is usually given as a course of 5 or 10 sessions, and your consultant or CNS will recommend a treatment plan tailored to you. Each session happens on alternate days (every other day).

No. HBOT isn’t painful. You may feel pressure in your ears as the chamber pressurises, similar to flying in an aeroplane, and we’ll show you how to equalise your ears to ease this. If you experience significant ear pain, tell our team straight away and your session can be paused.

Our chamber is spacious and designed to feel open rather than enclosed, with a TV and music to help you relax. You can speak to the healthcare professional monitoring you at any time via intercom, and your session can be stopped if you feel anxious or distressed.

Yes. Avoid smoking and caffeine for 2–4 hours, and plan to take it easy for the rest of the day, as mild tiredness is normal.

Some private medical insurance policies may cover HBOT, depending on your policy and the condition being treated. We recommend checking with your insurer before you start treatment. You can also pay for treatment yourself.

At The London Clinic, each session is ÂŁ180. We offer a package price for 5 sessions at the cost of ÂŁ800 for self-paying patients.

Throughout your session, you’ll be able to talk to the healthcare professional monitoring you through an intercom, so you’re never on your own.
