Consultation and diagnostic tests

After being referred by your General Practitioner, your consultant urologist will take a full history from you by asking about your health.

They’ll carry out an examination and order blood investigations, this may be followed by a scan and biopsy if there are signs of prostate disease.

Observation and monitoring:  In some men, small, early cancers can be watched carefully without affecting survival or quality of life.

Tests for detecting prostate cancer

Having made a diagnosis of possible prostate cancer, your consultant may order tests to confirm this, and to look at the size and stage of your cancer to plan the best treatment.

PSA is a protein secreted by the prostate gland. It is elevated in all forms of prostate disease.

The London Clinic has a state-of-the-art imaging department with experts to perform the tests and interpret the results.

3T MRI scanner

Tissue is taken from the prostate gland using a fine needle. The London Clinic’s pathologists will then check for cancer cells.

Prostate Cancer Treatment

In patients where the disease is more aggressive and still within the prostate we offer a range of options.

Surgery can remove the prostate and the cancer cells within the gland. The London Clinic was the first private hospital in the UK to offer cutting-edge robotic surgery. This is a form of keyhole surgery which enables our surgeons to operate on the prostate with greater accuracy and fewer complications.

Radical prostatectomy

High-energy X-ray radiation is directed at the prostate gland. This destroys the cells and stops them from spreading and growing.

External beam radiotherapy

The male hormone testosterone drives the growth of prostate cancer cells. If its action is blocked, the cancer will usually get smaller. It won’t cure the condition but it can be effective when used with other treatments.

The London Clinic also offers new focal treatments including high-intensity focused ultrasound and cryotherapy.

Combination of treatments

If the cancer has spread outside the prostate gland, a combination of treatments can be used to control symptoms, slow down the growth and spread of the cancer and maintain quality of life.

Blocking the action of testosterone, or reducing testosterone in the body can shrink tumours and slow cancer growth. Innovative new drugs Abiraterone and Enzalutamide can help control hormones, reduce symptoms and improve survival in men who are not responding to treatment.

Different combinations of chemotherapy can be given by mouth or intravenous injection. These prevent the remaining cancer cells dividing and spreading.
