When to consider an eye health check

You may benefit from one of our eye assessments if you h

  • Blurred or patchy vision, especially at the edges
  • A family history of glaucoma or previous high eye pressure
  • Flashes, floaters or other new changes in what you can see
  • Dry, gritty, burning or watering eyes that affect work, driving or screen use
  • Health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure that can affect the retina

The eye services you can book with us

At The London Clinic Eye Centre you can book focused assessments tailored to your main concern, with direct access to further diagnostics and treatments if needed.

Glaucoma often develops slowly and may not cause symptoms until significant vision has been lost, so regular checks are vital if you are at risk. Our glaucoma checks are designed to detect glaucoma and related problems early, support ongoing monitoring and protect your long‑term vision.

After the assessment, your consultant will explain your glaucoma risk, outline any need for treatment or monitoring and, if required, arrange ongoing care within our glaucoma service at The London Clinic Eye Centre.

Your glaucoma check includes:

  • Measurement of your eye pressure (intraocular pressure).
  • Detailed examination and imaging of your optic nerve.
  • Detailed examination and imaging of your optic nerve
  • Assessment of your drainage angle and, where appropriate, corneal thickness.

The retina is the light‑sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Subtle changes here can be an early sign of conditions such as diabetic eye disease, macular problems or damage from certain medications. Our retinal eye checks help to detect these issues early so that treatment can start before your vision is affected.

Your consultant will review the images with you, explain any changes and discuss whether you need treatment, regular monitoring or simple reassurance.

Your retinal eye check includes:

  • Measurement of your vision (visual acuity).
  • Examination of the retina and optic nerve, often after dilating your pupils.
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans to create detailed cross‑sectional images of the retina.
  • Retinal photographs and, where needed, wide‑field imaging and fundus autofluorescence to highlight early areas of retinal stress

Dry eye can cause grittiness, burning, variable vision and a feeling that your eyes are tired or sore, particularly with screens or air‑conditioned environments. Our dedicated dry eye clinic in central London is a one‑stop service to understand why your eyes are uncomfortable and to create a tailored plan to relieve symptoms.

Based on these findings, we agree a personalised treatment plan, which may include lubricating eye drops, lid hygiene, in‑clinic therapies and practical changes to help keep your eyes more comfortable day to day.

At your dry eye clinic visit you will have:

  • A detailed discussion of your symptoms, lifestyle and medical history.
  • Examination of your eyelids, tear film and eye surface.
  • Tests or imaging to assess tear quality and stability, and meibomian gland function where relevant

Common questions about eye checks

Get answers to questions you may have about accessing world-class treatment at The London Clinic Eye Centre.

Many patients self‑refer to our central London eye clinic for glaucoma or retinal health checks or for assessment in the dry eye clinic, while others are referred by optometrists or GPs. Our Eye Centre team can advise on the best route when you contact us.

A comprehensive eye assessment usually takes around one to two hours, allowing time for imaging, any eye drops and a consultant review of your results.

If your pupils are dilated for retinal imaging, your vision may be temporarily blurred and more sensitive to light. You may prefer not to drive until this wears off, and we recommend bringing sunglasses for your journey home.

If we detect signs of glaucoma, retinal disease, severe dry eye or another eye condition, your consultant will explain the diagnosis and discuss treatment or further tests. With our full range of eye services on‑site, we can usually continue your care within The London Clinic Eye Centre if you choose.
