What is it for?
Diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome
What is our Dry Eye Clinic?
Our Dry Eye Clinic is a referral and self-referral service for clinicians and patients, delivering rapid assessment, clear diagnosis and dependable management of dry eye syndrome.
Led by experienced optometrists, the clinic combines the latest diagnostic technology with same-day treatment planning – allowing you to refer with confidence and avoid unnecessary delays in care.
This one-stop service is ideal for patients whose symptoms are affecting their quality of life, as well as for those who require dry eye management ahead of ophthalmic surgery.
Appointments are held weekly on Fridays from 9am to 4pm at The London Clinic Eye Centre, located on Harley Street. Where appropriate, patients are referred to our consultant ophthalmologists for further care.
We offer flexible appointment times to suit a range of schedules and aim to minimise wait times wherever possible.
What does our Dry Eye Clinic cover?
As part of the Dry Eye Clinic appointment, we provide a comprehensive assessment, led by specialist optometrists trained in dry eye diagnostics and management.
We use advanced, evidence-based tools to identify the cause of symptoms and guide treatment from the outset – helping to provide support with a faster route to care.
Our initial assessment includes:
- Slit lamp examination with fluorescein dye – to assess the tear film and rule out other eye conditions
- Visual acuity testing – to measure how well the patient sees at various distances
- Tear osmolarity testing – measuring salt concentration to assess tear quality
- Blink rate and blink analysis – including digital imaging
- Tear break-up time and tear prism height (meniscus analysis) – to evaluate tear film stability and volume
- Meibomian gland imaging – assessing gland function and health
- High-resolution video and image capture – used to build a diagnostic profile and support follow-up care
All of this is carried out during the first appointment, which takes 30–60 minutes.
Dry eye syndrome treatment options
Once the assessment is complete, a treatment plan will be discussed, and treatment will begin if needed. All treatment is tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and may be adjusted over time
We may recommend treatments such as:
- Initial treatment pack – a take-home kit containing heat mask, eyelid wipes and lubricating eye drops to cleanse, hydrate and stabilise the tear film
- Meibomian gland expression – a gentle procedure to release oil from blocked glands
- Punctal plugs – small inserts that slow tear drainage and help retain moisture on the eye surface
- Specialist eyelid cleaning
These treatments form the foundation of a personalised management plan, helping maintain comfort and protect long-term eye health.
Please note that treatments are not included in the cost of our Dry Eye Clinic diagnostics service. We’ll ensure all pricing is transparent so you know exactly what to expect.
Who can use our Dry Eye Clinic?
Our Dry Eye Clinic can be used by both patients who want to refer themselves and through referral from healthcare professionals (including GPs, optometrists and consultants). We welcome both insured and self-pay patients.
The service is open to dry eye patients at every stage – whether first signs of symptoms, pre-surgery planning or for extra support with ongoing condition management.
We also welcome those looking for a second opinion or further assessment after a dry eye diagnosis. Some are referred by their doctor, while others choose to come to us directly. Our team can offer reassurance, review current treatment plans or suggest new ways to manage ongoing symptoms.
