Glaucoma Health Check: an overview

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve becomes permanently damaged over time. In many cases, vision loss is gradual and can go unnoticed until it’s advanced. By the time symptoms such as blurred vision appear, more than 80% of sight may already be lost and cannot be restored.

A Glaucoma Health Check is an important part of protecting long-term eye health, particularly for people over 40 or those with a family history of the condition. Because glaucoma often develops silently, regular checks are vital to detect changes before vision is affected.

Our Glaucoma Health Check includes a detailed assessment of your eye pressure, alongside an expert examination and consultation. This thorough eye check can identify glaucoma early and help preserve your vision.

Our Glaucoma Health Check package costs £786.

What’s included in a Glaucoma Health Check?

The Glaucoma Health Check is designed for anyone who needs routine or preventive monitoring for glaucoma. Each appointment lasts around 1.5 hours.

During your visit, our ophthalmic nurses and technicians will first carry out a series of specialist tests, including:

After your tests, you’ll have a consultation with a consultant ophthalmologist, who’ll review all the results, discuss your current eye health and any symptoms you’re experiencing, and talk through the next steps.

If needed, they’ll also create a personalised treatment plan.

Tailored treatment plans

If needed, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan, which may include:

  • Prescribed eye drops – these may help relieve eye pressure
  • Cataract surgery – this can help improve your vision and lower eye pressure
  • Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) – to drain the fluid from your eye
  • Laser surgery (peripheral iridotomy) – a laser is used to create a new channel in your eye to help drain fluid
  • Glaucoma surgery – a surgical way of draining fluid from your eye

These treatments are arranged separately with a consultant ophthalmologist and will be at an additional cost. You can find out more about how we treat glaucoma at The London Clinic Eye Centre on our glaucoma treatment page.
