Professor Laurence Lovat consultant profile

Professor Laurence Lovat is a highly experienced gastroenterologist, focusing primarily on upper gastrointestinal disease management together with upper and lower GI cancer prevention. He offers both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy.

In addition to his extensive NHS clinical expertise as a consultant at UCLH, he also leads the Innovative Systems in Gastroenterology and Healthcare Technology lab at UCL. He was previously Head of Department for the Research Department for Targeted Intervention from 2013-2018 and Clinical Director of the Wellcome and EPSRC funded WEISS Centre at UCL until 2024. This has now become the UCL Hawkes Centre.

Professor Lovat’s research portfolio is diverse including development of ground-breaking diagnostics and treatments for acid reflux and Barrett’s oesophagus. together with artificial intelligence for endoscopy (founder of Odin Vision) and improving workflows in gastroenterology services and training.

As a member of the Central London Patient Safety Research Collaborative (PSRC), he is innovating novel tools using AI to improve patient safety including a ground-breaking respiratory monitor. He is also leading development of a simple endoscopy simulator to help train the next generation of endoscopists.

Professor Lovat is passionate about offering the highest quality service to patients and students whilst also ensuring that his research will bring benefits for future generations.
