Bio
Mr McKenna is a highly skilled, fellowship trained spinal surgeon with an extensive orthopaedic background.
Having spent over 10 years as a full-time NHS consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital dealing with all aspects of spinal disorders, he now practises full-time within the independent sector. His commitment to patient-centred care, coupled with his expertise in spinal and orthopaedic conditions, makes him a trusted specialist for those suffering from complex and chronic pain syndromes.
Mr McKenna is fully trained in all aspects of Spinal Surgery including cervical and lumbar degenerative conditions, tumour, trauma and scoliosis. He qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1993 and rotated through hospitals in London during his Basic Surgical Training. Then he completed Specialist Registrar training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Wessex Rotation from 1999 to 2005. As part of that training, he spent a year at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham as a Spinal Fellow.
Given his comprehensive orthopaedics background, Mr McKenna is ideally placed to evaluate and distinguish whether a patient's pain is truly spinal in origin or if it may be stemming from other areas such as the hips, shoulders, or other joints. This holistic approach ensures that each patient receives an accurate diagnosis and the most effective treatment plan, whether that involves surgical intervention or conservative management.
In his work, Mr McKenna is known for employing the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robot-assisted spinal surgery using the Excelcius Spinal Robot. Minimally invasive techniques allow for quicker recovery times and less postoperative discomfort.
In 2005 Mr McKenna was awarded the Spine Society of Europe Clinical Award, an international prize for clinical research into lumbar spinal fusion for low back pain.
