What is it for?

Treatment to reduces the distressing urinary symptoms

Treatment overview

The Rezum® System is an innovative new treatment for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH). The London Clinic is one of the first private hospitals in London to offer patients this revolutionary, minimally-invasive treatment which reduces the distressing urinary symptoms of BPH, without affecting sexual function.

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia is a common condition in men over 50 years of age. It is not usually a serious threat to health, but causes problems with the flow of urine, interrupting sleep, and affecting wellbeing.

The Urology specialists at The London Clinic use medication and surgery to treat BPH. For people who don’t want to take drugs long-term or undergo surgery, the Rezum System is a fast, effective, and precise alternative.

The Rezum System uses heat energy to destroy prostate tissue and shrink the gland. The System is safe, effective and clinically proven to ease symptoms and improve quality of life.

FAQs

The Rezum System offers an effective alternative to lifelong medication and prostate surgery. Surgical and medical treatments for BPH can cause side-effects, including sexual dysfunction.

The Rezum System uses precisely targeted steam to reduce the size of the prostate, improving urinary symptoms, and preserving normal sexual function.

The procedure is performed as a day case with no need for a general anaesthetic, avoiding the risks and complications of surgery. The treatment is quick, painless, and there is less downtime following treatment. Most men can get back to living a full and active life within a few days.

Most men get relief from symptoms as early as two weeks after the procedure, and improvements can continue for as long as three months. Research has shown that patients still benefit four years after treatment with the Rezum System.

The specialist Urology service at The London Clinic will evaluate your suitability for treatment with the Rezum System. The world-leading Urologists will carefully assess your symptoms and discuss the effect they’re having on your life.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia causes problems with passing urine. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Difficulty starting the flow of urine
  • Needing to pass urine more frequently
  • A weak urine stream
  • Feeling that the bladder isn’t emptying completely
  • Dribbling after passing urine
  • Getting up at night to go to the toilet
  • Urgency when you need to pass urine Incontinence and leaking of urine

Your consultant may order some investigations to gather more information. They will then discuss the potential therapeutic options, answer any questions, and develop a bespoke treatment plan.

The Rezum System treatment at The London Clinic is carried out as a day-case procedure. This is usually done under general anaesthetic or under sedation in most cases. Occasionally, it can be performed under local anaesthetic.Your Urologist will discuss your options and ensure you are comfortable throughout.

A narrow, flexible telescope is carefully inserted into the penis; this allows your consultant to view the prostate and accurately target treatment. A fine needle injects water vapour directly into the prostate gland.

The thermal energy progressively shrinks the obstructive prostate tissue, with improvements first becoming apparent around two weeks after the procedure.

Treatment is quick and straightforward, taking between three and seven minutes. You should experience minimal pain or discomfort.

All treatments have potential side-effects. The London Clinic’s experienced Urology consultants, together with the skilled nursing and support staff, work to minimise risks and support your safe recovery.

The Rezum System has been shown to be generally safe. Potential problems include:

  • Painful urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Blood in the semen
  • A decrease in the volume of the ejaculate
  • Urinary tract infection.

Your consultant will explain the risks and benefits of treatment and answer all your questions and concerns.

Your recovery will depend on your general health and wellbeing. However, most people can return to normal activities within a few days. Many men can pass urine naturally after the procedure, but patients will need to go home with a catheter for the first few days.

Your Urology Consultant will arrange a post-op appointment to discuss the effectiveness of the treatment and check that you are healthy and happy with your results.

In accordance with NICE, the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, the Urology consultants work with highly-trained multidisciplinary teams to discuss and plan your treatment.
