Back home in Barbados, Ian is a bit of a musical legend and celebrity. The guitarist, songwriter, producer, and performer has been in the music scene for decades and he has played with big stars from the 80s and 90s such as Eddy Grant of ‘Electric Avenue’ fame, Des’ree and Roachford amongst others.

The musician, 65, said, “Since turning 39, I’ve always had an annual check-up. It’s really important and I tell all my male friends to do the same.”

It was during an annual medical for his prostate, that Ian’s PSA (prostate-specific antigen) reading came back high. The PSA is a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland, and a PSA test measures the level of this protein in your blood.

The London Clinic’s Consultant Urologist, Dr Jonathan Noël, who also happens to be from Barbados, travelled to the island for an outreach clinic at Bayview Hospital when he met Ian.

Ian explains, “I was referred to a urologist and that’s where I met Dr Noël in April. He suggested an MRI and then a biopsy, as the scan revealed some shadowing.”

Biopsy revealed prostate cancer...

Unfortunately, prostate cancer was diagnosed after the biopsy. As robotic assisted surgery was not an option on the island, Ian decided to head to The London Clinic for a prostatectomy.

“After meeting Dr Noël, I knew he would be the best person for my surgery. I was in The London Clinic for two days, and up and about the next morning. It was comforting to have Dr Noël, a fellow Bajan, look after me and one of the nurses in the theatre was also from Barbados so I felt quite at home. It was quite a comfort.”

He said “everything was lovely – from all the staff I met, to the tests and food. I was well taken care of.”

Dr Noël runs outreach clinic in Barbados for patients throughout Caribbean

Dr Noël runs a couple of outreach clinics in Barbados each year, through the Bayview Hospital and sees patients from throughout the Caribbean.

Dr Noël said his patient was very impressed with everything at The London Clinic, adding, “After I reviewed Mr Alleyne the morning after surgery, he insisted on walking me out of the ward, which was very nice and a total first for me!”.

Now back home in Barbados, Ian has the following advice, “I recommend all men, especially from age 40 upwards, to have annual tests without hesitation – and not just for the prostate. Many are put off by the thought of the digit test but this isn’t the standard test anymore. An MRI scan is the first test.

It’s important to test for blood pressure, cholesterol, prostate, colon, sugar, and catch these things early. I also want to say how vital private medical insurance is too.”
