The London Clinic patient, Richard, shares his experience with ClariFix treatment for chronic rhinitis.
Spring time can be miserable for hay-fever sufferers, but spare a thought for the estimated 20% of the UK population who suffer year-round chronic rhinitis. Chronic rhinitis includes allergic rhinitis (AR) and non allergic rhinitis (NAR).
Triggered by allergies, dust, pollens, scents, and even a temperature change, symptoms caused by inflammation include nasal congestion, runny nose, post-nasal drip, sneezing and itching, affecting the eyes, ears or throat.
Richard, 36, a communications supervisor, said “Rhinitis has been an issue ever since childhood. One side of my nose was constantly blocked 24/7.
He explained, “Its mainly dust that triggers it but it can be seasonal. If I got in the car, and the fans were on, perfume, aerosols, walking through Duty Free can set it off…. anything… really fresh cold air when going on a run any time of year, the sudden temperature change could trigger it.”
Richard says he has ‘wasted a lot of time trying to solve the problem and been fobbed off by a lot of consultants over the years’ who would just give him nasal sprays or pumps which were only ever a temporary fix and never a long-lasting positive effect.
After finding positive reviews, Richard contacted Mr Jonathan Joseph, Consultant ENT Surgeon at The London Clinic, who specialises in sinus disease and nasal problems and could offer a solution that would work.
ClariFix is a minimally invasive medical procedure using cryotherapy – controlled freezing – to target the overactive posterior nasal nerve, responsible for excessive mucus production and inflammation in chronic rhinitis.
Richard, who recently relocated to Brisbane, Australia, explains “If I had known how successful it would be, I would have done this 20 years ago.”
Not widely available, ClariFix has been available since around 2022.
Mr Jonathan Joseph said, “We know that there is a particular nerve in the back of the nose that causes it to become congested and create watery mucus when irritated by allergy or any other environmental stimulus. Anatomical studies have identified the exact location of the nerve so it can be targeted.
“ClariFix applies precise cold therapy to stop this nerve from working. This can dramatically reduce nasal congestion and dripping in the right patient. In Richard’s case, I also carried out inferior turbinate reduction at the same time also under local anaesthetic. This was to further improve his nasal airflow and reduce congestion.”
Before ClariFix was available, the only intervention available was a much bigger operation which comes with certain risks. ClariFix is carried out as a day procedure in the outpatient clinic and takes about 30 minutes with minimal risk.
Richard, who had his consultation in October 2025, with treatment a few weeks later, said, “Even during the procedure I could feel a bit of a difference but there is a very noticeable difference and the after affect was massive. I can visibly see in the mirror both nostrils breathing in air.
“Keeping fit and doing any cardiovascular work has been restrictive and a struggle and I would normally get a stitch. I just couldn’t get the oxygen in and running and cardiovascular was harder than it needed to be. But now my cardiovascular fitness is next level for the first time in my life. I 100% recommend ClariFix if all other treatments don’t work. “
