Professor Paul Foster is an internationally-renowned consultant ophthalmic surgeon and a key opinion leader in glaucoma. With 20 years of experience as a consultant in the glaucoma service at the world famous Moorfields Eye Hospital, his areas of expertise include glaucoma diagnosis and management, and cataract surgery in patients with glaucoma. He has shaped the current treatment protocols for angle-closure glaucoma worldwide, and led the introduction of clear lens extraction surgery for people with this condition.
He was named as one of the hundred most influential people in ophthalmology worldwide by the Ophthalmologist magazine in 2014, 2016, 2023 and 2024.
As an esteemed academic, Prof. Foster holds various positions at renowned institutions. He is the Theme Leader for Population and Data Sciences at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, where he also serves as a Professor of Glaucoma Studies. Moreover, he is an Honorary Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and research theme leader for Translational Data Science at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology (Moorfields & UCL).
Prof. Foster's research interests lie in the impact of lifestyle, environment, and diet on glaucoma, cataract and other chronic eye diseases. He has made significant contributions to the field through his research on the prevention of angle-closure glaucoma by laser surgery, the use of lens extraction for control of angle-closure glaucoma, and advancements in the diagnosis and management of open angle glaucoma. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as The Lancet, The BMJ, and "Nature" titled journals.

Prof. Foster was named as one of the hundred most influential people in ophthalmology worldwide by the Ophthalmologist magazine in 2014, 2016, 2023 and 2024.
His contributions to the field of ophthalmology have been internationally recognized through awards in the UK, the USA, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and China.
He holds prestigious editorial positions in leading ophthalmology journals, including the British Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Glaucoma.
He is a member of the prestigious Glaucoma Research Society, limited to 100 members globally, and has also been ranked among the Top 25 Eye & Vision Researchers in Europe by Lab Times Online.
His contributions have been honoured with prestigious awards, including:
