Bio

Miss Ekpemi Irune is a Consultant Laryngolgy, Head & Neck and Thyroid Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hopsital, Cambridge. Her practice includes Complex Benign and malignant Head and Neck pathology (with reconstruction). She has a special interest in transoral laser micro-surgery and in transoral robotic surgery. In light of the recent pandemic, she developed and leads a multi-specialist voice, swallow and upper airway clinic for sufferers of long COVID-19 in the NHS. She also undertakes research as Chief, Principal and co-investigator for studies in oncology and COVID-19. She was recently featured in the 4th series of the BBC Documentary - Surgeons: At The Edge of Life where she performed complex surgery on two patients.

Miss Irune completed her Higher Specialist Surgical Training in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery in major teaching hospitals in England. She has an MSc in Surgical Science from Imperial College, London. She undertook clinical research studying functional outcomes following treatment in Head & Neck cancer at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Furthermore, she completed the European Academy Fellowship in Facial - Plastic Surgery at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. In addition, she undertook the National Training Interface Group Fellowship in Aesthetic and Reconstructive surgery, working with surgeons in Plastic surgery, Rhinoplasty surgery and Craniofacial surgery in London. She completed the Royal College of Surgeons of England Post-CCT Fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Imperial Hospitals NHS Trust. She has published in peer reviewed journals.

Miss Irune is actively involved in Higher Specialist Surgical Training and participates in national and international teaching programmes. She is an Examiner in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Intercollegiate exams. She has a keen interest in the application of Mixed Realty technology in surgery and is a founding member of the global network - The Holomedicine Association. She is also a member of the British Association of Head & Neck Oncologists where she sits on the Protocol & Guidance Committee: she is a member of the European Academy of Facial - Plastic Surgeons and the British Association for Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons. She is a past president of Women in ENT Surgery UK and continues to advocate for diversity and equity amongst surgeons in the workplace. She also mentors a number of individuals in the public and private sector. She also provides professional opinions and surgical services on an adhoc basis to medical teams and patients in West Africa. She is an avid reader and loves horse riding.
