Bio

Professor Shahid A Khan is Professor of Practice (Hepatology) at Imperial College London and an NHS Consultant Hepatologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He has lectured on liver disease nationally and internationally at Hepatology and Gastroenterology conferences, including state of the art and invited presentations. His sub-specialty interests within Liver disease include Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Primary Liver Cancer, Fibroscan, Abnormal liver function tests, Abdominal pain, Viral Hepatitis and Endoscopy. For several years he ran the dedicated NAFLD Clinic at Imperial Healthcare and set-up dedicated clinics for cirrhosis and primary liver cancer. He is the lead author on the National guidelines for biliary cancer and is co-author on both the International and European guidelines. He has published extensively in the medical literature, having authored around 100 peer reviewed publications including original research articles, reviews and book chapters. Professor Khan is currently Chair of Cholangiocarcinoma UK and serves on the NRCI HPB Cancer National Sub-group Committee and the Advisory Boards of the International Liver Cancer Association and the AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma UK Charity. He also currently serves on two national liver disease clinical trial Monitoring Committees.

Professor Khan enjoys a large teaching role, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and is an accredited UK Royal College of Physicians Educator and. He has supervised several PhD/MD studies in liver disease and is also Director of Admissions and Inclusivity for Imperial College Medical School, as well as previously serving as Director of the Gastroenterology & Hepatology BSc degree programme at Imperial College London and Director of Clinical Studies at St Mary’s Hospital Campus. In light of his educational achievements, he has been selected as a Senior Fellow of the UK’s Higher Education Academy and has won Teaching awards at Imperial College London. He is a member of the British Medical Association, the Association of Physicians of GB and Ireland, the British Association for the Study of the Liver, the British Society of Gastroenterology, the European Association for the Study of the Liver and the International Liver Cancer Association, where he has served as the Chair of a Special Interest Group on biliary cancer.

Research Interests

Professor Khan has published extensively on various aspects of liver disease and he is currently chairing a national study of biliary tract/cholangiocarcinoma epidemiology, in partnership with Public Health England and the AMMF Charity. Professor Khan also has an interest in biomarker development using “omic” technology and has published on metabolomic and proteomic analysis of biofluids in hepatobiliary cancer. He is currently supervising projects in conjunction with colleagues in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London to develop aptamers for diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in hepatopancreaticobiliary cancer.
