Bio

Mr Dasgupta has interests in comprehensive treatments for prostatic enlargement, renal stone management and prevention, neuropathic voiding conditions, and urothelial malignancy.

After graduating from Cambridge University, with a thesis on Neuroanatomy, his MD thesis (Queen Square, UCL) focussed on Neural Mechanisms of Voiding; he has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, procured a prestigious Wellcome Trust project grant, and a Visiting Professorship to the Cleveland Clinic. He was also an Edmondson Fellowship to the University of South California (LA) and a Simpson-Smith Fellowship to Duke University. He has published original descriptions of  botulinum toxin for neuropathic bladder, cannabinoids in Multiple Sclerosis, Sacral Nerve Stimulation for voiding dysfunction and Sildenafil for Female Sexual Dysfunction and also brain imaging for bladder control.

Since appointment as Consultant Urological Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare 15 years ago, he has been local Principal Investigator for 2 large national clinical urinary stone trials (TISU and PURE), publishing seminal papers on stone treatment (TISU, awarded Best Clinical Research paper by EAU in 2021) and prostate treatment (UK-ROPE); he is the global Chair of the Research Council of the Societe Internationale d'Urologie (with headquarters in Montreal) and a Board Member of the SIU. He is also an FRCS(Urol) examiner for the Joint Committee for Intercollegiate Examinations, and an undergraduate tutor for Final Year medical school students at Imperial College.

In the field of BPH, he has demonstrated and spoken about a range of techniques at international meetings including laser prostatectomy (HOLEP), Bipolar TURP, ablative treatments (Aquablation, Rezum) and embolisation (PAE).

For stone disease, he has trained many colleagues in ureteroscopic laser treatment, percutaneous stone surgery, offers extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), as well as running a joint Metabolic stone clinic for recurrent stone formers.

For haematuria and urothelial conditions, he has also supervised the development a novel diagnostic probe, which may advance diagnostics beyond traditional biopsy techniques.

Other research interests include endoluminal robotics, mechanical actuation, and biofilm prevention.
