  • There are many different types of arthritis but the most important decision to be made in diagnosis is differentiating a degenerative process (osteoarthritis) from an inflammatory one
  • One in three people are affected by arthritis during their lifetime with many people not receiving the support they need
  • Symptoms can include: joint pain and tenderness, inflammation, joint swelling, stiffness, redness and/ or warmth, limited motion range, fatigue, joint deformity
  • Arthritis can occur at any age
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is more common amongst women in their 20s or 30s and degenerative arthritis is more common amongst people 65+
  • Early diagnosis and treatment is very important

Inflammatory arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints. Many forms of this are due to autoimmune diseases – when the immune system turns against the body. Research shows this may be related to genetics but other factors include infectious agents, stress, cigarette smoke and hormones.

Degenerative arthritis, the most common form of arthritis, caused by “wear and tear” is normally a disease brought on by ageing and/or resulting from regular use, or over use, of joints through sports, or obesity.

If you have any swelling or pain in and around your joints, don’t delay in getting it checked out. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for your general wellbeing as many of these diseases are long-term and can worsen over time.

The good news is, medication and treatment is tailored to the individual, providing optimal results to help manage pain, control symptoms and prevent further deterioration.
