The Rafaelo® procedure is a new and effective treatment that significantly reduces and eliminates symptoms of internal haemorrhoids (also known as piles). The London Clinic is one of a handful of private hospitals in London to offer this revolutionary technique.

Rafaelo® uses the established technology of radiofrequency ablation. This allows patients to return home on the same day of treatment with minimal post-operative pain, if any at all, and quickly return to normal daily activities.

Haemorrhoids cause:

  • Bleeding
  • Discharge
  • Irritation
  • Pain

Radiofrequency ablation heats up the tissue within the haemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and detach from the anal wall. Radiofrequency ablation aims to significantly reduce symptoms with minimal risk of those complications typically associated with more invasive treatments such as haemorrhoidectomy.

If you have internal haemorrhoids (graded between 1-3), your consultant is likely to recommend Rafaelo®. Some grade 4 haemorrhoids may be reduced in size, and symptoms might be significantly improved, but in most cases this treatment will not remove the physical mass completely and surgery may still be required.

The recent Journal of Coloproctology paper has shown radiofrequency ablation’s safety and effectiveness in patients with grade 3 haemorrhoids.

Benefits of the procedure:

  • Quick relief of symptoms
  • No/mild bleeding
  • Only local anaesthesia
  • Fast return to daily activity
  • Approx. 15-minute procedure
  • No overnight hospital stay

Rafaelo® is usually done under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation. It involves inserting a small device into your back passage called a proctoscope. This allows the surgeon to examine the haemorrhoids.

The surgeon will use the Rafaelo probe to deliver the radiofrequency energy to treat the haemorrhoid. This aims to limit its blood supply causing it to shrink and fall away, relieving you of your symptoms. The whole procedure takes an average of 15 minutes.
