The cervix is the neck of the womb. It is lined by a membrane of cells that can change and become abnormal. If left, these cells can sometimes become cancerous and grow into tumours.
The risk of getting cancer is linked to age, genetic background and lifestyle. In the UK, more than half of women with cervical cancer are under 45 and although all women could potentially develop the disease, some people are at increased risk:
Women with human papillomavirus infection (HPV). Research shows that some high-risk strains of HPV may cause cervical cancer.
However, the genital wart virus, HPV, is common and easily transmitted during sexual contact.
Most infected women have no symptoms, so without testing, it’s impossible to know if you’re at risk.
Other lifestyle factors are also linked to cervical cancer but this may be because they are also associated with an increased risk of HPV infection. These include:
- The oral contraceptive pill.
- Smoking.
- First intercourse at a younger age.
- High number of sexual partners.
- HIV infection.
In the early stages, there may be no symptoms or signs, but later you may notice:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding, including heavier loss or bleeding between periods.
- Vaginal bleeding after sex.
- Vaginal discharge which may be unpleasant or unusual.
- If the cancer grows bigger, it can block the urine flow out of the bladder, causing back pain.

Cervical smear: Smear tests can detect abnormal cells on the cervix that could to lead to cancer.
Identifying these at an early stage, means they can be destroyed to prevent cancer developing.
Colposcopy: Colposcopy is a way of examining the cervix. A speculum is inserted into the vagina and a microscope is used to inspect the neck of the womb and to take biopsies.
If any abnormalities are found, treatment to destroy or remove the cells can also be performed by colposcopy.
The London Clinic has a colposcopy suite with a dedicated female nurse present. Gynaecology consultants who specialise in the assessment and treatment of cervical disease will perform the procedure and support you through the process.
