Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a newer type of weight-loss treatment. It reduces the size of your stomach without the need for surgery.
It’s performed using an instrument inserted through the mouth to the stomach (endoscopy) that enables your doctor to use stitches to reduce the size of your stomach.
A gastric balloon is actually a non-surgical treatment option we offer for overweight patients to help you manage your weight.
It is performed using an instrument inserted through the mouth to the stomach (endoscopy) which your doctor inserts a collapsed gastric balloon through your oesophagus into your stomach.
This creates a smaller stomach space so you feel full quicker.
Our consultation may prescribe weight loss medication as part of a holistic weight management programme.
Weight loss surgery
Weight loss (or bariatric) surgery at The London Clinic is performed by highly experienced and skilled weight loss surgeons using the latest techniques and equipment, backed up by excellent clinical care. Weight loss surgery can help people lose weight, treat obesity-related diseases, and improve your quality of life.
A major goal of weight loss surgeries is to reduce excess body fat and improve or treat co-existing medical conditions, such as:
• Type 2 diabetes
• Cardiovascular diseases
• Sleep apnoea
• Osteoarthritis
Weight loss procedures are classified as either restrictive or malabsorptive:
• Restrictive procedures limit food intake by reducing the size of the stomach
• Malabsorptive procedures the amount of nutrients your body can absorb by removing (or ‘bypassing’ sections) of your intestine
A gastric band is performed using keyhole surgery to place an adjustable narrow balloon (gastric band) around the outside of your stomach at the top.
This creates a small pouch with a small volume that restricts the amount of food you can eat without feeling uncomfortably full.
Suitable for patients with a BMI of 30 or greater.
A sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, reduces the size of the stomach by permanently removing about 75% of its volume.
The stomach is divided vertically from top to bottom leaving either a pyramidal or a banana shaped stomach that empties into the small intestine, which remains intact.
Suitable for patients with a BMI of 50 or less.
A gastric bypass is a more extensive and complex procedure than a sleeve gastrectomy. It is suitable for people with the above BMI range, as it is not safe to attempt in more obese patients.
A gastric bypass separates off a major part of the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch that reduces the amount of food you can eat.
For patients with a BMI of 65 or over.
The duodenal switch is a major form of weight loss surgery, often done in the most obese patients as the second operation in a two-stage procedure – you have a sleeve gastrectomy first to reduce your excess weight by 30 to 50%.
The operation combines procedures to restrict food intake and reduce nutrient absorption.
