Treatment overview
A transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) is a non-invasive procedure to repair a small hiatus hernia or prevent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
During the procedure your surgeon reconstructs your gastroesophageal valve so that acid from your stomach can no longer escape into your food pipe (oesophagus).
One of our world-leading gastroenterologists will carry out your procedure at our private state-of-the-art Endoscopy Unit near Harley Street.
By choosing The London Clinic, you’ll get a more compassionate and connected kind of care, from enhanced pre-admission through to aftercare and follow up.

FAQs
A transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) is a same-day, non-surgical procedure. It normally takes around 40 minutes under a general anaesthetic.
Once asleep, your surgeon gently places a thin, camera-tipped flexible tube, called an endoscope, into your stomach via your mouth.
The endoscope attaches to a specially designed instrument called a TIF device.
The TIF device allows your surgeon to hold and carefully fold tissue from your oesophagus around the tissue from the top of your stomach.
This fold is then fastened together to form a new gastroesophageal valve, which stops gastric acid from escaping into your oesophagus.
Once complete, your surgeon carefully removes the endoscope and TIF device from inside your stomach.
Because the procedure is incisionless, there are no cuts made to your skin or tissues, so there’s no need to apply any stitches or dressing.
After the procedure, your care team will take you to the recovery suite, so they can safely monitor you until you come round from the anaesthetic.
A transoral incisionless fundoplication is an advanced procedure, with an excellent safety record.
It has several advantages over laparoscopic surgery (Nissen fundoplication) including:
- Available to a wide range of patients
- Shorter procedure time than some surgical options
- Non-surgical - no internal tissues are cut
- No scars
- Less pain post procedure
- A faster recovery than some surgeries
- You may be able to reduce or stop your anti-reflux medication
After the procedure you may find certain symptoms improve or disappear including:
- Heartburn (acid reflux)
- Burping
- Nausea
- Regurgitation
- Poor sleep
- Asthma like symptoms
- Chronic cough
- Hoarseness
A few weeks following the procedure you should be able to eat a normal diet and need less, or no anti-reflux medication.
Each patient is different and how long it takes to recover from your transoral incisionless fundoplication can vary.
For around the first six weeks you’ll need to follow a special diet, which your care team will talk to you about.
It’s best to try and avoid strenuous exercise in the first few weeks, or until your surgeon agrees it’s okay.
Most people find they can go back to work after a few days, depending on the type of work they do.
Because a transoral incisionless fundoplication is minimally invasive, with no surgical cutting, you should recover fairly quickly.
Apart from some minor soreness in your throat and chest area, you should feel fine a few days after the procedure.
While your new valve heals, you’ll need to be on a special diet for a few weeks, including liquid food, before you can enjoy a normal diet.

During your same day procedure, your dedicated care team will look after you and make sure you have everything you need.
