Treatment overview
Hyaluronic acid knee and hip injections help treat pain in your joints if you have osteoarthritis.
In a healthy joint, a thick, slippery substance called synovial fluid provides lubrication. This allows bones to glide easily against one another.
Synovial fluid is important in preventing wear and tear by keeping the bones slightly apart and acting as a shock absorber. When you have osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid breaks down. And having less hyaluronic acid can lead to joint pain and stiffness.

FAQs
Our specialist orthopaedic surgeons can inject hyaluronic acid into your hip or knee joint, in the part which contains synovial fluid.
The non-surgical treatment works by restoring the normal balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid. Injecting hyaluronic acid into the joint is also known as ‘viscosupplementation’.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that holds on to water. It is present in the body where moisture is stored, and it acts as a lubricant between layers of tissue to stop friction.
Examples are inside the eyeball, the tear film, the joint cartilage, the synovial fluid in the joints plus all the mucous membranes of the body.
Your skin is made up of around 55% hyaluronic acid too, to help maintain its structure and stop it from drying out.
Hyaluronic acid is an essential part of synovial fluid, allowing the fluid to act as a lubricant, a shock absorber and a filter.
This controls the movement of cells and large molecules within the joint. This is very important in weight-bearing joints such as the hips and knees.
The benefits of hyaluronic acid knee and hip injections include:
- Pain relief that lasts for many months
- Delaying the need for surgery
- It’s a quick procedure, which you can do again if you need to
- Being able to move around more easily
- High chance of improving other osteoarthritis symptoms, like swelling or inflammation
One brand we use at The London Clinic is OSTENIL PLUS® which can decrease pain and stiffness and improve the other symptoms of osteoarthritis.
The hyaluronic acid in OSTENIL PLUS is very pure and is manufactured using a process called fermentation. It has been used to successfully treat thousands of our patients.
The exact make-up of the hyaluronic acid in this injection has been carefully chosen so that it’s as effective as possible in treating osteoarthritis. An alternative brand of hyaluronic acid injections we use is called Durolane, which can provide long term osteoarthritis pain relief too.
There are very few side effects from an injection with OSTENIL PLUS. Some patients have some pain and swelling for 24-48 hours after treatment, which normally settles down quickly.
OSTENIL PLUS has no animal proteins in it, so is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, and is suitable for vegetarians.
You will be advised to rest the joint from any strenuous activities, like running or jumping, for a few days.
