Treatment overview

Body sculpting is an operation that aims to enhance your body shape and overall appearance.

Liposculpture is a more sophisticated take on liposuction which sculpts the body to your desired look.

Fat that has been removed can be used elsewhere in the body if needed.

As we get older, some of us find that we develop stubborn pockets of fat that are difficult to shift with diet and exercise.

We might have unwanted fat on the inner and outer thighs, stomach, love handles, or in the upper arms, even if we are near our target weight. The pattern of these fat deposits can often be hereditary and sometimes the only way to change the body shape is through liposculpture.

FAQs

Body sculpting surgery works by remodelling your body shape to improve the overall look and appearance. Your cosmetic surgeon introduces fine hollow metal tubes into the fatty tissue by making very small incisions.

These usually leave no noticeable scars as they are carefully placed within natural skin folds. The tubes are moved into position and suction is used to remove fatty material.

Our cosmetic surgeons at The London Clinic have access to two innovative liposuction machines.

They use ultrasound delivered through fine tubes to break up and liquefy the fat to make it easier to remove.

Your procedure can take a number of hours depending on the size and number of areas being treated.

You will have a general anaesthetic which means you will be asleep during surgery. Liposculpture typically involves an overnight stay at The London Clinic.

If your treatment only includes one specific area, it can be done in one day with a local anaesthetic only. Your surgeon will be able to advise you on the exact length of time required during your consultation.

The benefits you can expect from body sculpting surgery depend on your personal circumstances.

Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss these with you during an initial consultation.

Our cosmetic surgery patients often tell us that the most popular benefits of body sculpting include:

  • Reducing the amount of visible body fat
  • Improving your body shape
  • A slimmer and more youthful appearance
  • Increased body confidence and a new lease of life

Immediately afterwards, it is completely normal to feel sore. Your care team will be on hand to give you any medication you might need for pain relief.

We advise that you wear your post-surgery compression garments to help with the healing process during your recovery time.

We may recommend you wear an elastic body stocking for about six weeks.

Lower leg stockings prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during the first ten days if you are unable to move around as much and need a lot of bed rest.

Usually, you will feel some discomfort during the first few weeks of recovery. Pain can be managed with medication that we will provide.

We recommend that you simply rest and relax as much as possible, avoiding exercise and generally taking it slow.

You might feel more tired than usual, but remember, this is normal and you’ll feel better as the days go by.

The amount of downtime you need will depend on the extent of your surgery. Generally, you should be able to return to work after the first week.

If you have a more physically demanding job, you’ll need three weeks or more at home for the best possible healing.

After a month, the pain, swelling and bruising will have gone down enough so you can exercise or go shopping.

You should still avoid exercising too much and heavy lifting at this stage, as your body continues to heal.

The exact time it takes you to recover from surgery will depend entirely on you.

Our enhanced pre-admission assessment will help you prepare for your surgery and know what to expect afterwards.

Your surgeon will work with other specialists to give you advice on prehabilitation. This includes things you can do before your operation for a head start on recovery.

We’ll help you recover as fully and quickly as possible. You’ll have regular follow-ups to make sure everything is as expected, and answer any questions you may have.

You can contact your care team at any time, and they’ll be happy to help.

Before you have body sculpting surgery, your surgeon and care team will discuss any side effects you may experience.

This is to make sure you’re well informed about your surgery, so you can feel confident and reassured that you know exactly what to expect.

The most common temporary side effects of liposculpture are:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Soreness and tenderness

You may need further treatment after surgery if you get:

  • Wound infection
  • Body scars
  • Increased or reduced sensation in the treatment area

You might have some scars after your liposculpture surgery.

Immediately after the surgery, the scars are usually dark or red, but they should fade or become lighter over the next 12 months.

Every effort will always be made by your surgeon to keep scars to a minimum.

Our expert surgeons who offer body sculpting have years of experience and extensive training in this specialty.

Your expert care team will guide you through your treatment, recovery plan and answer all your questions.

If you have a general anaesthetic, you’ll typically stay with us for one night after your procedure while you recover from the operation.

We offer extra touches, such as personalised food menus, to make your stay as comfortable and as much like home as possible.

You’ll have your own nurse, supported by an entire nursing team, who’ll help get you feeling like yourself again.

You can also choose additional therapies to help you make the most of your recovery and reduce any discomfort.

Once you’re ready to leave The London Clinic, we’ll give you advice to follow once you’re home for a speedy recovery.

We’ll promise to keep in contact with you over the following weeks to ensure your recovery is going smoothly.
