The Times newspaper interviewed Mr Vivek Gulati, our consultant orthopaedic hip and knee surgeon, for a feature about the rise of hip surgery, even among the under-60s including tennis player Andy Murray.

X-ray showing hip replacement

“There are definitely a lot more people having hip surgery at a young age,” says Vivek. “We see people in their twenties having it done. Genetics, anatomical issues and being overweight are factors for some people, but it is also general wear and tear from physical activity and the fact that people are playing serious sports and getting injured at a young age,” he adds.

Commenting on Andy Murray’s recent hip resurfacing procedure (not carried out at The London Clinic), Vivek says: “A resurfacing procedure preserves more of the patient’s bone, allows for a good range of movement and is better for some people with an active lifestyle. It can give people a much better quality of life for 20 to 30 years.”
