Lorraine Grover, Psychosexual Nurse Specialist helps men and women overcome difficulties with sex, through treatments and psychosexual help. She features here in: The Times Weekend article sharing her expertise on the importance of a healthy body and a healthy mind – and how exercise can boost the libido.

Mrs Lorraine Grover

A study undertaken by researchers at the University of California confirmed that exercise, running in particular, is not only good for the heart and cardio-vascular health and the body in general, but also for sexual function.

Lorraine, volunteers for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of their “Ask an Expert” community forum and her page garners over 11,000 views per month on average, although this recently increased to 14,500 last month. She is also a well-respected spokeswoman for the Sexual Advice Association. The Times sought her advice to confirm findings from several studies “that have a shown a connection between physical fitness, psychological wellbeing and sexual health.”

For patients with cancer physical activity has been proven to have a number of important benefits including, reducing fatigue, preserving cardio respiratory and muscular fitness, psychological well-being and sexual health.

For men with type 2 diabetes, who can be at risk of becoming obese which, can also lead to erectile problems, Lorraine confirms, “running is particularly good” as it is the most effective way to achieve weight loss which in turn, improves sexual function.

Strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles through running, swimming, cycling and other exercise, is also highlighted as a key area of importance for both women and men, leading to “better sexual function.”

In conclusion, exercise helps to reduce weight, improves blood flow to the sexual organs and makes us feel better about ourselves.
