The London Clinic is delighted to continue as the first hospital in the UK to host live screenings from the Royal Opera House, for our patients, consultants and employees to enjoy.

ROH dancers in a scene from La Bayadere

The season begins on Tuesday 13 November with the iconic 19th century Russian ballet La Bayadère, originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877. Natalia Makarova's production of this classic ballet brings an exotic world of temple dancers and noble warriors to life.

On Monday 3 December, we will be live-streaming the ever popular seasonal favourite The Nutcracker. Lev Ivanov's 1892 ballet combined with Tchaikovsky's sumptuous, iconic score are presented in a festive period setting with vivid designs to make this a charming and magical production. We hope the production (already sold-out at the Royal Opera House) will bring joy to our patients and their visitors, in the comfort of their own rooms.

A recent major investment in our patient television services means that we are uniquely positioned to provide this experience at The London Clinic. We believe that music, art and creativity can lift the morale of our patients, which may help their treatment and recovery.

Live-streaming the Royal Opera House performances, provides a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with the outside world. It is an integral part of the artistic and cultural programme implemented throughout the Clinic, for holistic and patient-centred care.

Denis Roche, Consultant Curator, commented:

“Throughout history, it has been recognised that the arts can have a role to play in the recovery of a patient, helping them to cope with a diagnosis and hospitalisation. More and more research points to the clinical benefits that these programmes can have in terms of health-related quality of life. Importantly, it keeps a patient connected to life outside of the hospital.”

Patients can tune into channel 555 to watch the performances.
