Dermatologists at The London Clinic diagnose and treat acne as well as prevent any acne scarring as much as possible.

How we treat acne

Most acne treatments aim to eliminate the underlying factors that cause spots to form. This is achieved by reducing the amount of sebum (the body’s natural oil) released by the skin’s sebaceous glands, removing the dead skin that blocks the pores and killing the bacteria infecting blocked pores.

Various treatments for mild to moderate acne include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide stops dead skin cells blocking pores and kills bacteria
  • Topical retinoids reduce the production of sebum
  • Topical antibiotics kill the bacteria that infect blocked pores
  • Azelaic acid removes dead skin and kills bacteria

These acne treatments are generally available as a cream, gel or lotion and may be used in combination to achieve the most effective results.

In most cases, it takes a number of weeks of daily application for the acne treatment to begin to work, and patience and diligence is required to overcome the problem.

Treatment for severe acne

Cases of severe acne usually need treatment with more effective acne treatments including oral antibiotics, such as tetracyclines, the contraceptive pill or oral doses of isotretinoin.

The contraceptive pill co-cyprindiol can improve the symptoms of acne, and can prove doubly useful, as many of the antibiotics used in acne treatment may interact with other contraceptive medications.

Isotretinoin is a powerful acne treatment and it must be taken with great care by sexually active women as it is known to cause birth defects.
