Treating blood cancers and other blood disorders

Treatment overview

Stem cell therapy can be used to treat certain types of blood cancers, such as leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma, and other diseases and conditions of the blood and immune system.

We offer this innovative treatment by world-class haematologists in a comfortable, safe and stress-free environment.

At London Haematology, our expert consultants perform stem cell transplants and bone marrow transplants in The London Clinic’s cutting-edge stem cell unit, using the latest equipment and technology.

The main stages of stem cell therapy are:

•    Tests and examinations – to assess your general health
•    Harvesting – the process of collecting stem cells, either from you or a donor
•    Conditioning – treatment to prepare your body for the transplant
•    Transplanting the stem cells – via a central line inserted into a vein or by injection
•    Recovery – you will need to stay in hospital for at least a few weeks until the transplant starts to work

At London Haematology, an expert multidisciplinary team will support you from your first consultation, during your procedure and throughout your recovery.

FAQ's

Stem cells are special human cells that are the body’s building blocks. They can develop into many different cell types, from muscle cells to brain cells.

In some cases, stem cells can also fix damaged body tissues. This ability is used by doctors to repair damaged cells and treat disease.

Our expert haematologists carry out three types of stem cell transplant:

•    Allogeneic transplant – stem cells are collected from an individual who is not the patient. This may be a relative or a healthy volunteer donor. Donors are matched through UK and international blood registries.

•    Autologous transplant – stem cells are collected from a patient’s body and stored for future transplant. This may be done before chemotherapy so cells that are damaged by the cancer treatment can be replaced by healthy stem cells.

•    Syngeneic transplant – a patient receives stem cells that have been collected from their healthy identical twin.

Your consultant at London Haematology will discuss your stem cell transplant options with you.

You may benefit from stem cell therapy if your blood cells or bone marrow are damaged or diseased.

If you receive chemotherapy for a blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma, this can cause damage to your bone marrow.

Stem cell therapy can be used to potentially repair this damage. As a result, this may allow you to be treated with higher doses of chemotherapy.

At London Haematology, our specialist consultants also use stem cell therapy to treat other conditions affecting blood cells and the immune system.

These include aplastic anaemia, sickle cell disease and thalassaemia.

London Haematology use a state-of-the-art stem cell unit which is based in The London Clinic that offers cutting-edge stem cell transplant procedures, as well as chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments.

Our stem cell unit has 12 first-class beds for the treatment of people with serious blood disorders and blood cancers.
