What is prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a series of injections into the ankle, knee or shoulder, in order to improve ligament laxity.

What conditions does it treat?

Amongst the conditions which benefit from prolotherapy treatments are stretched, sprained or lax ligaments.

How does prolotherapy work?

A mixture of dextrose with a local anaesthetic is injected into each end of the affected ligament, close to its attachment to the bone.

This eventually stimulates the body to make new fibres, which are laid down within the substance of ligaments. This has the effect of thickening and strengthening them.

How long does prolotherapy take to work?

Improvements are generally gradual and noted over a period of weeks to months.

Hwo soon can I return to work after the procedure?

Patients are able to return to work immediately, as there is no need to rest after the injection(s).
