ClinicSafe Q&A with Patient
One of our patients, who underwent radical robotic prostatectomy using ClinicSafe, describes his experience.
PIONEERING NERVE-SPARING TECHNIQUE FOR PROSTATE CANCER SURGERY
ClinicSafe, as featured in the ‘Me and My Operation' in the Daily Mail, is a pioneering nerve-sparing technique for patients with prostate cancer. The procedure is performed by Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, Mr Senthil Nathan.
For more information and to book an appointment with Mr Nathan please contact our Customer Service Team and mention reference number: DMClinicSafe.
The London Clinic is the first private hospital in the world to offer ClinicSafe to patients with prostate cancer.
This pioneering new technique allows the nerves to be preserved during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), resulting in preservation of erectile function and improved continence post-surgery.
Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy is one of the most effective keyhole surgery techniques available to patients with intermediate, or aggressive prostate cancer. Using a robot increases precision and control, by allowing the surgeon unparalleled vision into the abdomen.
ClinicSafe is a new technique which takes place during surgery. It works by freezing the nerves surrounding the prostate, to improve the accuracy of detecting exactly where the cancer is. This ensures that (cancer-free) nerves which control the erectile function can be saved, instead of being removed along with the prostate.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF CLINICSAFE?
- Quicker recovery time
- Preservation of erectile function
- Improve continence
UNDERSTANDING YOUR TREATMENT
The London Clinic Urology service assesses your suitability for ClinicSafe. Mr Senthil Nathan will discuss your individual care with you, treatment options, and will be able to answer any questions you have.
A MRI scan or biopsy will be requested to accurately detect where the cancer is, in proximity to the nerves. During surgery the prostate will be frozen and a sample taken to further identify the exact location of the cancer cells in proximity to the prostate.
With this new technology only 3 out of 31 men required partial removal of the nerves on one side, as opposed to sacrificing the nerves on both sides. Nearly 90% of men benefited by having their nerves saved with ClinicSafe.
THE UROLOGY AND ROBOTICS SERVICE
Mr Senthil Nathan introduced ClinicSafe to The London Clinic with the specific remit of preserving sexual function for men treated with robotic radical prostatectomy.
Mr Nathan has been using robots in his practice for ten years using the da Vinci®. The London Clinic was the first ever private hospital in the UK to trial and offer robotic surgery back in 2005.
At The London Clinic, your consultant surgeon, specialist nurse and the multidisciplinary team are committed to maintaining your physical health. From exercises to follow-up appointments, they will support you and your family, every step of the way.
Most men are able to return to a normally functioning sexual life within 6-8 weeks. Your clinical nurse specialist will ask you to do pelvic floor exercises. This builds up the pelvic floor muscle to help stop leakage post-surgery.
"I’m really happy with the way it’s healed. Having a strong team behind you helps - everyone from Mr Nathan, the anaesthetists, the specialist nurses to the medical secretaries – they’re at the top of their trade and passionate about achieving the very best outcome for the patient"
The London Clinic offers affordable, competitive self-pay packages for certain treatments.
Patients have the option to spread the cost of treatment with Chrysalis Finance.
