What is the ExcelsiusGPS® spinal robot, and what does it do?

The ExcelsiusGPS is a tool which assists a spinal consultant during surgery on a patient. It is described by the manufacturers as "the world’s first technology to combine a rigid robotic arm and full navigation capabilities into one adaptable platform for accurate trajectory alignment in spine surgery."

The built-in navigation feature enables the surgeon to pinpoint exactly where to place surgical screws, for example.

What happens during the surgery?

The process for an operation using this technology is as follows:

  1. Medical images are taken and imported into the ExcelsiusGPS 
  2. The surgeon starts to plan the size and placement of pedicle screws based on the medical images of the patient
  3. The robotic arm follows the surgeon’s planned pathway (working in a manner similar to a sat-nav route in a car).
  4. This pathway instructs the robot to accurately place screws using navigated tools. All the way through the procedure, the surgeon can see the surgical tools working via the equipment screen.
