The da Vinci ® Surgical System is a pioneering alternative to both open surgery and keyhole surgery.

The London Clinic was the first private hospital in the UK to trial and offer this surgical system, which uses robotic technology. This enables our expert surgeons to perform incredibly complex procedures.

The London Clinic installed its new da Vinci Xi surgical system, with a Trump table and secondary screen, in October 2020.

About da Vinci systems

The system is a computer enhanced surgical robot, designed to mimic the operating surgeon’s hand and wrist movements for greater accuracy. Your surgeon is in complete control of the da Vinci System at all times.

The consultant operates the da Vinci robot whilst seated at a console in the theatre. Our da Vinci robot is located in our state-of-the-art hybrid theatre, with a screen providing 3D high-definition vision and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand.

The tiny incisions and enhanced vision and control for the surgeon, means patients can recover quicker, move onto extra treatments if required, and return to normal activities sooner. Our world-leading consultants discuss your case in multi-disciplinary meetings (MDTs) to ensure you receive the most beneficial treatment. There is also support before and after surgery from our clinical nurse specialists (CNS).

The da Vinci Surgical System is located in our hybrid theatre. Spanning Harley Street and Devonshire Place, The London Clinic is situated in the heart of London’s internationally-known medical district. This central location, together with the new, state-of-the art technologies and facilities that are not widely available in other hospitals, makes The London Clinic the hospital of choice for about 120,000 patients every year.

Offering affordable and competitive self-pay packages and expert support from Clinical Nurse Specialists and our specialised multidisciplinary team, 98% of our patients said they would recommend The London Clinic to their friends and families.

Advantages of the da Vinci Surgical System

A da Vinci procedure typically offers many benefits over conventional surgical procedures, including:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring due to smaller incisions
  • Lower risk of infection or complications
  • Less blood loss (fewer transfusions)
  • Reduces hospital stay by 40% post operation
  • Faster return to normal activities (sexual function, urinary continence)

Treatment facts

First, the surgeon will make a few tiny incisions to insert miniaturised instruments and a high-definition 3D camera inside the patient. The camera allows the surgeon to view a highly magnified, high-definition image of the surgical area.

Seated at an ergonomically-designed console, with eyes and hands matching the instruments, the surgeon uses the controls below the monitor to operate the robotic arms and camera. The system then translates, in real time, the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into the identical movements of the instruments inside the patient.

Recovery and side effects

Complications resulting from robotic surgery are rare but can still occur. Your surgeon will discuss with you the risks of your procedure. The robotic da Vinci’s accuracy and precision has been linked with reduced trauma to organs and delicate tissue. Also, patients have shorter hospital stays at The London Clinic compared with conventional open surgical procedures.
