Introduction to pain management

‘Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage’ - International Association for the Study of Pain

Long term pain can also be referred to as persistent or chronic pain. It is usually defined as pain that persists beyond 3 months or after healing is complete.

Chronic pain can significantly impact the physical, social and psychological well-being of a person. Prolonged pain could lead to disability which may affect independence and quality of life.

Physiotherapy optimises a person’s healing at every stage of the rehabilitative process.

Evidence suggests that patients with chronic pain can benefit from education, empowerment and exercise. Physiotherapy contributes towards the non-pharmacological approach to pain management which forms part of integrative medicine.

Physiotherapy’s wide of scope of practice guides people with long-term pain to best possible quality of life as part of a multimodal bio-psychosocial approach to health and wellbeing.
