Arranging private medical insurance
The London Clinic works with all major UK private medical insurance companies and many international companies.
If you have a private medical insurance, please contact your insurance provider before you visit the hospital to check that your treatment is covered.
Selecting your healthcare provider and sorting out your private medical insurance might be a complex process, especially if it's your first time using it.
Step 1
To access treatment through your private medical insurance you will first need to obtain a referral from your GP or a private GP.
Step 2
Then, you will need to confirm you are covered for the tests, investigations or treatment you need with your private medical insurer. This is so you can provide details of your cover and authorisation to us.
The best way to ensure you are covered is to contact your private medical insurer at each stage of your treatment.
Claims processes differ from insurer to insurer but they will be able to help you and guide you through the rest of the process.
For hospital treatments, we have direct settlement processes in place with all the major insurance companies so you don’t have to worry about billing and payment.
We just need you to provide details of your insurer, your registration number, your level of cover and scheme details and your pre-authorisation number which your insurer will provide.

Choosing your consultant
When you are choosing the consultant you see, there are a number of things to consider before making your decision. Often your GP will help to guide you to a consultant with the specialist expertise to treat your condition but there are also some tips to help you make your choice:
- Check your consultant is properly trained, qualified and experienced – the General Medical Council has a list of all qualified consultants and those who appear on the Specialist Register. This register shows that a consultant has specialised in his or her chosen field and has the experience necessary to treat your condition.
- Research your consultant on the internet – find out about their training, qualifications and experience. Leading consultants at The London Clinic usually also practice in the NHS, often hold teaching posts and submit papers to medical journals.
- Ask your GP for advice – if you have researched a consultant and would like your GP’s opinion, they should be able to give you support in your decision making.
Consultant search
Our consultant search tool helps you to choose a consultant. Each consultant has a profile that allows you to find out about their experience, special interests and background. You can search for a consultant in a number of ways:
- Search for a consultant who treats your condition
- Search for a consultant who performs the procedure you need
- Search for a consultant by service (e.g. orthopaedics or digestive health)
- Search for a consultant by name
