endocrinology

The endocrine system is a complex group of glands that together with the nervous system controls our bodies. However, the endocrine system uses hormones to stimulate the metabolic activities of the cells.

Endocrine glands are organs that make hormones. These are chemicals that help to control activities in your body. Hormones control reproduction, metabolism (food burning and waste elimination), and growth and development. Hormones also control the way we respond to our surroundings, and they help to provide the proper amount of energy and nutrition our bodies needs to function.

The endocrine glands include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus and there are some in the intestines.

Often these conditions are complex and involve many body systems – for example hormones can affect our musculoskeletal system, nervous system, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, immune systems and/or others.

Conditions we treat

Endocrinologists are trained to diagnose and treat hormone problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in your system. They take care of many conditions including:

  • Thyroid diseases such as Hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis), Hyperthyroidism, Goitre (Enlarged thyroid gland), Thyroid cancers (papillary, follicular, medullary, anaplastic thyroid cancers), Graves’s disease (thyroid eye disease), Hashimoto’s thyroiditis etc
  • Metabolic disorders such as Metabolic syndrome, Insulin resistance, Obesity
  • Pituitary conditions such as prolactinoma, hypopituitarism, pituitary Cushing’s, acromegaly, pituitary apoplexy, pituitary adenoma and diabetes insipidus
  • Sex and fertility such as Hypogonadism, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility and ovarian failure, Kallman syndrome
  • Parathyroid, calcium and bone conditions such as hypercalcaemia, hypocalcaemia, osteoporosis, osteopenia.
  • Conditions of the adrenal gland such as Adrenal Cushing’s syndrome, Conn’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, adrenal insufficiency, adrenocortical adenomas and carcinomas, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, phaeochromocytoma
  • Cholesterol (lipid) disorders
  • Abnormal growth (short and tall stature), Laron syndrome
  • Neuro-endocrine conditions such as insulinomas, multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) and neuro endocrine tumours of the guts

Services provided by our specialist endocrine nurses

Our highly trained specialist endocrine nurses provide a full range of basal and dynamic endocrine tests and procedures that are essential for assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with endocrine disease. Endocrine tests and services include:

  • All basal hormone assessments
  • Peripheral visual field plotting
  • Genetic tests for endocrine conditions - support, follow up and patient education in all aspects of endocrinology including growth hormone and hydrocortisone replacement therapies.
  • Selective venous sampling procedures such as Adrenal Venous Sampling, Parathyroid Venous Sampling, Calcium Stimulated Venous Sampling, Petrosal Venous Sampling and Total Body Venous Sampling in conjunction with the endocrine radiologist- Nurse prescriber to support endocrine consultants
  • Daycase infusions to support the care of endocrine patients
  • All dynamic endocrine function tests such as Insulin Tolerance Test, Glucagon Test, Growth Hormone Day Curve, Hydrocortisone Day Curve, Prolonged Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, Corticotrophin Releasing Hormone Test, Low Dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test, Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone Test, Saline Infusion Test, Cushing’s Day Curve, Metyrapone Day Curve, Synacthen Test, Long Synacthen Test, Pentagastrin Stimulation Test, Thyrotrophin releasing hormone test, 8 hour Water Deprivation Test, Prolonged Water Deprivation Test

The physicians in the department have particular interests in diseases related to:

  • deficiency or excess secretion of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal cortex and medulla
  • the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus
  • the ovary and testis
  • the endocrine pancreas
  • the diffuse system of the gastrointestinal tract and metabolic syndrome,
  • osteoporosis
  • endocrine malignancy
