The London Clinic is the first private hospital in the UK to offer patients the latest diagnostic imaging with the new Siemens MAGNETOM Vida 3T MRI scanner.

The 3T MRI scanner works by generating a powerful magnetic field that is twice the strength of other 1.5 Tesla scanners, to produce exceptional image quality, supporting speciality areas such as orthopaedics, oncology, urology and neurology.

Our Radiologists can better visualise small structures or disease within the body. The London Clinic’s priority is to provide the best patient focused technology and to make you feel at ease during your stay with us.

The Siemens MAGNETOM Vida is the first 3T MRI scanner with BioMatrix Technology, designed with revolutionary features to serve demands in high-end imaging. 3T MRI is the gold standard for some specialities including orthopaedics and prostate imaging.

The 3T MRI scanner is available for appointments from Friday 14th September.

The advantages of our 3T MRI scanner

The 3T MRI technology produces a higher spatial resolution image, resulting in better visualisation of small structures or disease, and detects earlier subtle abnormalities within the body. This exceptional detail is particularly beneficial for health conditions involving the brain, spine, musculoskeletal and vascular system.

3T MRI scanner The London Clinic

The 3T MRI scanner offers the following advantages:

  • Greater patient comfort with a 70 cm open bore
  • Exceptional anatomic detail and the field strength of choice for orthopaedics, neurosciences, breast imaging, urology, oncology and gynaecology
  • For certain scans 3T is faster, meaning greater patient tolerance
  • New services such as brain (functional imaging), interventional, breast and prostate biopsy
  •  A reduction in imaging time and improved contrast and resolution
  • Full free breathing during abdominal and cardiac exams
  • Whole-body MRI exams performed reliably and predictably
  • Increased scan efficiency with powerful 60/200 gradients
  • Spectroscopy to measure the chemical composition of tissue and therefore can increase the accuracy of diagnosis in conditions of the brain, prostate or spine
  • Improved small coils for musculoskeletal imaging
  • Neuroradiology uses a 3T MRI for spectroscopy, functional MRI, and angiography
  • Musculoskeletal specialists find that images of knees, shoulders, and other joints are much clearer at 3T compared to 1.5T

BioMatrix Technology

This is the first Siemens 3T scanner to have BioMatrix Technology. This technology offers a 3T MRI system that provides unprecedented levels of personalisation throughout the MRI scan to effectively address the unique challenges of each patient group and provide high quality imaging to our patients.

Siemens states that the BioMatrix technology improves the quality and reproducibility of scans and this helps to avoid rescanning of patients. The suite was designed to ensure patient comfort. This sets the stage for our patients to feel at ease during their scan.

Understanding your scan

A 3T MRI scanner is a large cylinder that’s open at both ends. You will lie on a motorised table that’s moved inside the scanner. You will enter the 3T either head first or feet first, depending on the area of your body being scanned.

The radiographer will use a computer to operate the 3T MRI scanner, which is placed in a different room, to keep away from the magnetic field.

You will be able to communicate with your radiographer, usually through an intercom, and they can view you at all times using a television screen.

To ensure the images are not blurred, it is crucial for your body to be still throughout the whole of the scan until the radiologist tells you to relax.

One scan can take from a couple of seconds to three or four minutes. They may ask you to hold your breath during short scans.

The MRI scanner will make loud tapping noises at specific times throughout the procedure. This is the electric current in the scanner coils being switched on and off. You may be given earplugs or headphones to wear.

Once the scan is over, your radiographer will move you out of the scanner.

If you’ve had a sedative, you will be asked to stay in the department until the effects have worn off. Alternatively, a friend or relative will need to take you home and stay with you till the effects have worn off. It is not safe to drive, use heavy machinery or drink alcohol for 24 hours after having a sedative.

3T MRI waiting area

The Radiologist will send a report to your specialist consultant who arranged the scan, who will discuss the results with you. It typically takes 24 hours to 48 hours for the results of a 3T MRI scan to come back.
