Mr Kovacs is a leading expert in breast cancer and reconstructive surgery with extensive experience in oncoplastic breast conservation, breast reconstruction and risk reduction breast surgery.
Mr Kovacs’ current NHS post is Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust providing care for men and women with symptomatic breast problems and screen detected breast malignancies

He received his surgical training in cancer surgery at the National Institute of Oncology from Budapest with a PhD degree in Surgical Oncology (2002). He is a European Board Certified (FEBS) Surgical Oncologist and Breast Surgeon since 2004. Mr Kovacs proceeded in further specialist training in breast reconstruction and oncoplastic breast surgery at the South Manchester University Hospitals and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Breast Units.
After Clinical Lead roles of two Breast Units in North Wales and Manchester, in 2013 Mr Kovacs was appointed at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Breast Unit as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, specialising in complex oncoplastic breast conservation techniques, immediate breast reconstruction and risk reduction surgery for high familial risk/ BRCA mutation carrier patients, providing expert care for women and men with symptomatic breast problems, screen detected breast cancer and breast reconstruction.
Mr Kovacs’ ethos is to offer individually tailored care for his patients taking into consideration their needs and personal choice.
Patients are seen in “One-Stop” Breast clinics where patients have an initial consultation, clinical examination and all necessary imaging investigations, biopsy on the same day.
Mr Kovacs believes in the evidence-based approach to breast cancer management, focusing on principles of surgical oncology and oncoplastic surgery, where cosmetics are just as important as the efficient treatment of disease.
At international level, Mr Kovacs is President of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) for 2018-2020, Chair and founder of the ESSO Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Course, Faculty on several prestigious international Breast Surgery masterclasses and workshops, Examiner for the European Board of Surgery Qualification in Breast Surgery since 2010, Associate Editor of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology and most recently Chair of BRESSO, a European platform on Breast Surgery Accreditation, promoting certified specialist surgical care for breast cancer patients: all women should be treated by specialists trained and accredited in breast surgical oncology.
