Professional profile
Jahangir (Jay) Ahmed is a consultant specialising in laryngology, head, neck and thyroid surgery who practises at Barts Health and University College Hospitals NHS Trusts. He is the current chair of the head and neck MDT at Barts Health and a core member of the Barts Thyroid MDT.
Mr. Ahmed was educated at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College School of Medicine, graduating in 2001 with the Gold medal in Pathology. He also attained an MA in experimental psychology from Cambridge.
He completed higher surgical ENT training in London teaching hospitals including The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s, Charing Cross, The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. These are internationally recognized centres of excellence and academia, where he gained quality experience in the breadth and depth of ENT. He was also awarded a PhD in molecular oncology (2015) for his work at The Barts Cancer Institute on the genetic optimization of Vaccinia viruses for immuno-therapy of cancer.
Mr. Ahmed has a high-volume practice and expertise in the surgical management of head and neck tumours from all subsites including tonsil, tongue, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), salivary gland and thyroid.
He is one of the core thyroid surgeons in the Barts Health Thyroid Multidisciplinary team (MDT); this is one of the largest thyroid cancer groups in the UK. He has a high-volume thyroid surgical practice and is one of the few surgeons on the panel designated to perform selective neck dissection in thyroid cancer patients with advanced disease.
Mr. Ahmed is skilled in transoral (scarless, through-the-mouth) laser and robotic surgery, with one of the highest-volume transoral robotic surgical practices in the UK.
He has significant experience in managing voice, complex airway and swallowing problems. Uniquely he runs a tertiary level practice in the surgical management of sleep disordered breathing ranging from snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) refractory to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), at Barts Health. Indeed, the team’s latest surgical audit has demonstrated tremendous success with 90% of OSA patients on CPAP who were treated by robotic surgery, not needing to use their CPAP post operatively.
Mr. Ahmed also performs a significant volume of advanced endoscopic sinus surgery and is therefore in a unique position to be able to offer safe, state of the art surgical treatment from nasal passage to voice box.
Mr. Ahmed is currently chairman and lead of the head and neck cancer MDT, is a founding member of the Robotic users’ group and a member of the thyroid MDT at Barts Health.
He has a keen research interest in minimally invasive transoral surgery and molecular treatment of cancers. He is a clinical lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. He has published over 30 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and over 12 book chapters in respected surgical and basic scientific textbooks. His research and clinical experience are regularly presented at national and international meetings.
Mr. Ahmed is passionate about education. He holds a PGC in Medical education and is education co-lead at Bart’s health; facilitating a training program for North-Thames higher surgical trainees and junior doctors. He is also part of the faculty in a number of London based instructional training courses in ENT. His involvement in academia and teaching means he keeps abreast of the latest evidence-based treatment protocols and technology in ENT.
Mr. Ahmed has gained a reputation for providing the highest quality care to every patient he treats. He is a firm believer of personalized medicine and aims to provide bespoke, individualized treatment plans for his patients. He will be readily accessible throughout their clinical journey and beyond, to ensure as comfortable an experience as possible.
