Professional profile

Mr Ali Mearza is the Clinical Director of ophthalmology and lead consultant ophthalmic Surgeon at London’s Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is responsible for a department of over 20 consultants across 3 sites; the western Eye Hospital in Marylebone, Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith and St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

His specialist interests are Cornea, Cataract & Refractive Surgery and he has particular expertise at reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Mr Mearza has full specialist registration with the General Medical Council and is one of only a handful of surgeons in the UK who is fellowship trained in both cornea and refractive surgery. He began his career in ophthalmic surgery in 1998 and has trained at some of the world’s most prestigious eye institutions.

He has gone out of his way to learn from the best travelling to Holland, Australia and Crete during his career and is considered one of the best surgeons in his field.

To date Mr Mearza has performed over 10,000 eye procedures including laser eye surgery, refractive lens exchange, corneal transplantation and reconstructive surgery. Every year people travel from over 25 countries specifically to see him for his opinion and surgical expertise.

He has a keen interest in clinical research and has over 30 peer reviewed publications to his name and has presented his work at numerous National and International meetings.

He also has a keen interest in voluntary ophthalmology and has performed charitable work in India, Bali, Burma, Madagascar, Bangladesh and Ghana helping some of the world’s neediest people see again.
