Professional profile

Dr Nick Burfitt is an Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology Consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London where he has been specializing in embolization and minimally invasive image-guided treatments since 2007.

Following school at Wimbledon College, Dr Burfitt completed a Biochemistry degree at Imperial College. After university he worked in the City on the LIFFE futures trading floor for Credit Lyonnaise Rouse.

During school and university Dr Burfitt had been keen rower, in 1988 he stopped work in the City to take up full-time training with the British Rowing Team, going on to compete at the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics.

During this break from work, Dr Burfitt decided on a change of career path and went on to study medicine, qualifying from Cambridge University in 1997.

After qualifing as a doctor, Dr Burfitt completed surgical training at St George's Hospital, then progressed to radiology training at St Marys Hospital, Paddington with an Interventional Radiology Fellowship at Charing Cross Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant in 2007 at Charing Cross, which is now part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

At Imperial he has focused on developing new services: Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE), deep venous stenting, renal tumour ablation , fenestrated EVAR and more recently MusculoSkeletal Embolisation (MSKE) for chronic joint and tendon pain. This is in addition to the well established treatments of uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE), varicocele embolisation, treatment of pelvic congestion syndrome, minimally invasive procedures for vascular disease and urological interventions.

Dr Burfitt is one of the leading experts performing Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE) in London and the UK. Following training in Lisbon, Portugal with the pioneer of PAE Professor João Pisco, Dr Burfitt started the PAE service at Imperial in 2015. As the primary operator at Imperial, he contributed cases to the Registry Of Prostate Embolization UK (ROPE-UK). The success of ROPE-UK led to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) recognition of PAE in 2018 as one of the standard BPH treatments in the UK. In 2016 Dr Burfitt also performed the first robotic PAE in the UK.

MusculoSkeletal Embolisation (MSKE) as treatment for chronic joint and tendon pain is an exciting new procedure being developed in Japan since 2009. In 2016 Dr Burfitt travelled to Tokyo for training with Dr Yuji Okuno, the originator of the technique and performed the first UK case in 2017. Working with his orthopaedic surgeon colleagues at Imperial, Dr Burfitt continues to develop this service for NHS and private patients.

At Imperial, Dr Burfitt works closely with the vascular surgeons in the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms with fenestrated EVAR. As a consequence of this expertise, Dr Burfitt has travelled widely teaching this technique to vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists throughout Europe, North and South America, also Australia and South Africa. He has published a number of peer-reviewed articles in this area and spoken at numerous international conferences on this subject.

Throughout his medical career, Dr Burfitt has focused on gaining expert training and experience to offer state-of-the-art, minimally invasive treatments to his patients. Understanding his patient's problems and concerns is of the utmost importance, Dr Burfitt prides himself on providing a full explanation of the treatment, the possible side effects and complications. This approach enables Dr Burfitt to tailor the treatment to the individual and provide an outstanding patient experience.
