Professional profile

Dr Athanasios Diamantopoulos is a consultant interventional radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust since 2013 and an Honorary Senior clinical lecturer at the Division of Imaging Sciences, School of Medicine, King’s College London since 2015. He qualified in 2004 from the medical school of University of Patras.

He has been trained in all aspects of general and interventional radiology at Patra's University Hospital. In 2012, he completed an interventional radiology fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas'. Following completion of his training, he was appointed Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas'.

In 2013, Athanasios was awarded a PhD from the University of Patras in experimental prevention of contrast induced nephropathy, an active research interest. In 2016, he obtained the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) diploma while in 2018 he was awarded the title of Fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (FCIRSE) as a recognition of his significant contribution to interventional radiology and/or cardiovascular imaging techniques.

Dr Diamantopoulos is a worldwide known Vascular and Interventional Radiologist and distinguishes himself by performing cutting-edge, minimally invasive vascular, non-vascular and interventional oncology procedures. This includes all aspects of basic and advanced interventional radiology procedures with a special focus in complex arterial above and below knee arterial vascular interventions especially in the diabetic patients, complex venous treatments and ablation of solid tumours as well as image guided biopsies and drainages embolization including varicocele and fibroid embolizations in adult and paediatric patients.

In an effort to deliver the best possible results, Dr Diamantopoulos likes to incorporate the latest technological advances into his treatment methods such as drug eluting technologies, carbon dioxide angiography, the latest atherectomy techniques and all the newest ablation technologies.

Dr Diamantopoulos has authored or co-authored more than 65 peer-reviewed original scientific papers and 5 book chapters which have been cited more than 1000 times. In addition, he has presented numerous oral free papers and scientific presentations and has been an invited lecturer in national and international conferences.

Finally, he is the co-investigator in numerous multicentre studies and the national primary investigator (PI) of the ERROR study funded by the European’s Union Horizon 2020 act investigating the development of a software which will predict the absorbed dose per organ in paediatric radiology investigations and the EMINENT study an industry funded study investigating the drug eluting stents for the peripheral arterial disease
