Most women are offered a breast reconstruction at the time of their mastectomy at The London Clinic. Some choose to take up the option while others decide to wait until later on.

There have been numerous advancements in this field recently and your consultant will be able to discuss your options with you. These may include:

Reconstruction with implants

This type of breast reconstruction uses breast implants to reshape your breasts. This reconstruction can be performed at the time of the mastectomy or as a delayed procedure.

Reconstruction with tissue flaps

This type of breast reconstruction involves taking a section of tissue from one area of your body (e.g. your back or abdomen) and relocating it to your chest to create a new breast mound. Breast reconstruction with flap surgery is a complex procedure performed by a surgeon. Sometimes breast reconstruction using your body’s own tissue can be accomplished at the time of your mastectomy.

In some cases, you’ll need a second operation to achieve a correctly positioned more natural-appearing breast or to have nipple reconstruction.
