Colposcopy service
Our colposcopy service is an outpatient service that has
been developed for women with abnormal cervical smear results, an
abnormal appearing cervix, or abnormal symptoms from the cervix
such as bleeding after sexual intercourse.
Our
service
An abnormal cervical smear can indicate
abnormal cells on the surface of the cervical skin,
and as a result a colposcopy may be required
for further investigation of these abnormalities.
The colposcopy takes between 15 and 20 minutes to complete, and
involves a detailed examination of the cervix using a speculum and
a small microscope called a colposcope.
The colposcope is positioned outside the vagina during the
examination and is used to
shine a light on the cervix and to magnify the view for the
consultant.
During this examination, an acetic acid solution is applied to
the cervix and vagina, which causes any abnormal tissue to turn
white in order for it to be easily identified. The consultant
may then request to take a biopsy of any abnormal tissue that
appears, for further investigation. The biopsy may cause a
small amount of discomfort for the patient; however,
a colposcopy is a relatively painless procedure for most
women.
Diagnosis
We provide a daily colposcopic consultation service, which
allows patients to book an appointment with a consultant
and to be seen without delay.
The results from the colposcopy are usually available within 1–2
weeks of the examination, and a subsequent appointment with
the consultant will be scheduled to discuss the results.
Most abnormalities can be dealt with quickly and simply, making
a colposcopy a highly effective tool for cervical screening and the
prevention of cervical
cancer.
Consultants
Our consultant gynaecologists are fully
accredited by the British Society of Colposcopy, and have extensive
experience in performing colposcopy examinations.
