Endoscopic ultrasound
Linear endoscopic ultrasound, to give it its full name,
provides detailed images of small masses in the chest and abdomen
that may be missed by other tests, and has a diagnostic accuracy of
90%. We believe the procedure will replace more invasive
techniques.
The endoscopist, using an endoscope with an ultrasound
incorporated into the tip, can now study the size and location of a
tumour in greater details and, if required, take a biopsy via a
fine needle passed through the scope to ascertain whether it is
benign or malignant.
Endoscopic ultrasound can also be used throughout a cancer
management programme, enabling endoscopists to monitor the cancer
and the effectiveness of treatments.
The benefits for patients are considerable:
- Very low risk
- Usually carried out as an outpatient procedure under light
sedation
- Carried out in about half the time of some traditional
procedures
- Highly accurate
