Endocrinology

The endocrine system is a complex group of glands that together with the nervous system controls our bodies. However, the endocrine system uses hormones to stimulate the metabolic activities of the cells.

Endocrine glands are organs that make hormones. These are chemicals that help to control activities in your body. Hormones control reproduction, metabolism (food burning and waste elimination), and growth and development. Hormones also control the way we respond to our surroundings, and they help to provide the proper amount of energy and nutrition our bodies needs to function. The endocrine glands include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus and there are some in the intestines.

Our Centre for Endocrinology is staffed by consultants specilising in both adult and paediatric endocrinology. Our endocrinologists are specially trained consultants who diagnose diseases including cancers that affect your body’s glands. Often these conditions are complex and involve many body systems – for example hormones can affect our musculoskeletal system, nervous system, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, immune systems and/or others.

Endocrinologists are trained to diagnose and treat hormone problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in your system. They take care of many conditions including:

- thyroid diseases

- metabolic disorders

- over or under production of hormones

- menopause

- osteoporosis and osteopenia

- hypertension

- cholesterol (lipid) disorders

- infertility

- abnormal growth (short and tall stature)

- disturbances of puberty

- sexual development

- virilism

- cancers of the endocrine glands

Our highly trained nursing staff provides a full range of basal and dynamic endocrine tests and procedures that are essential for assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with endocrine disease. Endocrine tests and services include:
