Liposuction
Liposuction removes pockets of stubborn fat to
achieve results where healthy diet and exercise cannot. Liposuction
is not used for weight loss but rather to correct problem areas so
you will see a shape change not a weight loss.
In women, the most usual areas for liposuction
treatment are the abdomen, hips and thighs, while men are often
treated in the breast area, hips and abdomen. Liposuction is not
limited to these areas, other areas which respond well include:
upper arms, under the chin and buttocks.
Process
The surgery will require a local or general
anaesthetic depending on each individual procedure.
The surgeon will insert a hollow tube,
cannula, through a small incision in your skin into the layers of
fat which lie deep beneath the skin. The cannula is connected to a
suction device which vacuums the fat from your body as the surgeon
breaks up the fat cells using a push/pull motion.
Post-surgery
You will be required to stay overnight, and
will need to take the first two weeks of your recuperation off
work. The swelling reduces after approximately a week, while the
bruising may take 3-4 weeks. The whole recovery process will last
from 4-6 weeks depending on your procedure.
Provided you maintain a healthy lifestyle your
liposuction results are permanent. Once fat cells have been removed
from an area there is no longer any preferential fat storage area
and any later fat gain will be distributed more evenly over the
entire body. The incisions made during the procedure will be small
and your surgeon will endeavour to put them in the most
inconspicuous areas for you.
