Trilogy® System with RapidArc™
The London Clinic is set to become one of the first UK hospitals
to offer cancer patients access to the advanced Trilogy®
System with RapidArc™ radiotherapy technology. This high tech
system delivers radiation directly into tumours to kill cancer
cells and obliterate or shrink the size of tumours.
Our consultants say this technology will decrease treatment
time, provide greater accuracy in eradicating cancer cells and ease
the impact of treatment on a patient. RapidArc™ will be used
initially to treat head and neck, prostate, breast, lung
and other forms of cancers.
Our Trilogy System with RapidArc™ radiotherapy
technology from Varian
Medical Systems is a new approach to delivering Image Guided -
Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IG-IMRT). It delivers
precise treatments in shorter times than conventional IMRT.
Image guidance improves tumour targeting, and
IMRT shapes the radiation dose so that it conforms closely to the
three-dimensional shape of the tumour. That means more radiation is
delivered to the tumour and less to surrounding healthy
tissues.
RapidArc™ also represents a major medical
advance in patient comfort and treatment accuracy because patient
treatment times are shorter - you don't have to hold still for
long, and can be in and out in a matter of minutes for each
treatment session.
RapidArc™ is delivered with a medical linear
accelerator, which is a large machine that generates high-powered
X-rays and sweeps around the patient lying on a treatment
couch. The radiation is delivered during the rotation; with
RapidArc™, the entire treatment is completed with a single rotation
of the machine.
The Trilogy® System will become an
important and invaluable part of the treatment offering to bring
better cancer care to patients at The London Clinic Cancer
Centre.
