Clinical Nurse Specialist - Breast Care
According to the National Institute for
Clinical Excellence, “All patients who have undergone treatment for
breast cancer should have continuing access for an indefinite
period to a breast care nurse who should provide a telephone advice
service and arrange appointments at a breast clinic if there seems
to be cause for concern” (NICE 2002)
This stance is followed here at The London
Clinic whereby all patients who fear they may have or have been
diagnosed with breast cancer have access to a breast care nurse,
from diagnosis through to treatment and beyond.
When treatment for breast cancer has been
completed a follow up plan will be decided upon between the patient
and the breast care team.
The enormity of diagnosis and/or
treatment can affect people at different times and in
different ways. Often it can be when treatment has finished.
This is why we emphasise that the team are
still there to support the patient in making the progression back
to their normal lives.
We emphasise to patients that the
doors of communication are always open and that they are welcome to
contact the team at any time.
Jenny Park, our clinical nurse specialist in breast care
provides patients and their families with information, care and
support throughout all aspects of treatment.
Prosthesis and specialist bra fitting
service
Silicone breast forms and specially designed bras may be fitted
following a mastectomy.
Lymphoedema service
Lymphoedema is swelling of the arm, which can develop in a small
number of patients following surgery for breast cancer. If
necessary this can be assessed, and appropriate advice and fitting
of a compression sleeve can be performed.
